The Pacha Ibiza Shake Up

Posted on April 13, 2013

Pacha celebrates 40 years this summer, four decades of entertaining the masses who come to Ibiza to hear the finest club music from the world’s best DJs. What started as a modest club has become one of the biggest, if not THE biggest club brand in the world, with merchandising worn all over the world and the list of franchise venues ever increasing. Pacha has become a lifestyle brand and one that can be very proud of its history.

As we head into the new season, the famous venue raised a few eyebrows when it announced that it was parting company with some of its biggest stars, after a long and illustrious relationship. There were also changes within the hierarchy at the club too and the resulting change in the weekly line up led to one of the most hotly anticipated announcements in years! Rumours flew of who would be coming in and on what had led to the others leaving in the first place, conversations and debates revolving around Pacha Ibiza raged the world over. When the announcement was made it became clear that the world’s most famous discoteque was in good hands as a mixture of underground and overground artists and brands filled the weekly spots and an old favourite was finally persuaded to take on a weekly slot. We caught up with Stephen Glen Hulme at Pacha to get the inside track on the changes and what they mean for Pacha Ibiza…

What was the thinking behind the big shake up in the weekly calendar for this summer?
We had the chance to change as we changed programming personnel, so we took that option to change.

Is this an example of no one being bigger than the club?
It’s the same as a football club, the club is the club, everything else is passing through, playing a part and moving on. The club and brand PACHA is the essence of everything – others have a different sense of what is the most important element of a club, whether it is simply four walls or more than that? – For me everything is important, from toilet attendant to security, designer of the posters to DJ in the booth, resident and star, accountant to decorator – The club Pacha needs every element to work, and when it does, that is what makes Pacha the perfect club for all.

The new line up has a balance of accessible almost commercial dance music alongside underground talent, was this a conscious decision?
I have been programming events, compilations and parties for more than 20 years, and with the new team in Pacha we felt we needed to get back towards the cutting edge of deeper beats, while holding on of what we believe is the best of the more energetic and epic sounds of now – along with the evergreen Flower Power going weekly, we are very happy with the 50/50 balance of underground beats and crossover electronic sounds and artists we have on board for 2013 and ahead.

David Guetta has been arguably the most successful party on the island in recent times, how important was it to maintain the Thursday night as an anchor for the rest of the week?
David is a true superstar, he can make his own decisions to do what he wants anywhere in the world, he chose to stay inside Pacha and we welcomed that decision with open arms of course – he and Cathy are icons, they live for what they do and we are proud to be part of what they give the world.

Flower Power goes weekly, which I’m guessing is something you have wanted for a while, how did you finally persuade them to take the weekly residency?
Was difficult and the thanks go to Fran for hounding Piti and Piti for finally giving in after many years of trying to get him to go weekly – his party is incredible, crazy, doesn’t fit but fits perfectly!

There are some exciting new names making their Pacha debut, what are you most looking forward to seeing?
Too hard to say, Solomun, John Digweed, Fritz Kalkbrenner, Guy Gerber, DJ Sneak and all the guys from the deeper side, on the other hand we did a lot of stuff in Miami with Chuckie/ Dirty Dutch, Hard Rock Sofa, Bassjackers and that whole set, who were so enthusiastic and “up for anything” that anything on that energetic side is going to be wild, also Hardwell should be major, Bob Sinclar always leaves the room exhausted and Martin Solveig back in Pacha is fantastic too – so much great stuff and of course Guetta has to be witnessed to be believed.

With the departures and subsequent arrivals, is this one of the most important seasons for the club in the last four decades?
Pacha is Pacha, Ibiza is Ibiza, and all talk of doom and gloom is way off mark, this season will be fantastic, we have our work cut out for sure, but we will prove to be a great ticket for anybody coming by. We are super happy that the Café Mambo guys from San Ann are onboard with us again, they will get even more involved in 2013, also The Rock from Ibiza Town will do their thing with us too, and with the continued success of Lio, the amazing new Destino hotel, as well as Pacha El Hotel and Pacha Restaurant all going full throttle, 2013 is gonna be great, musically we are on beat, karma-wise we are in tune, and a sense of real family is back in our collective thinking.
