Sankeys Smashes The Glass Ceiling

Posted on January 29, 2016

When it comes to recognizing female talent, it has long been thought that the dance music industry could do better. We have been blessed with some amazing female DJs/ producers over the years and the current crop are doing their bit to push the musical envelope but when it comes to recognition, they are in the minority at the upper echelons of DJ polls. Sankeys Ibiza boss David Vincent is on a mission to shatter that glass ceiling, giving female DJs that live and play on the island of Ibiza a chance to become residents in Sankeys Ibiza this summer.

As he explains, Ibiza has made a huge impact on his life. “A year ago I was admitted to hospital where a last minute emergency operation saved my life. The Universe and this island saved me for a reason, I believe it was not my time to go, because I have not completed my mission in this current dimension. During the winter in Ibiza I have met some amazing and special island female friends. Females have always been close to me; I was brought up solely by great females like my mother, her two sisters and my beautiful grandmother. I have always been very close to this gender and have always had many female friends.”

Acutely aware of the imbalance within the industry, David Vincent is determined to address it and give female DJs on the island a chance to play at one of the best clubbing venues on the planet, alongside some of the best international talent. “My industry has never really helped woman DJs on an equal level as men (I don’t want to go into it right now), but there is definitely a glass ceiling happening, look at the resident advisor results for 2015 for proof of this. There were only four female DJs in the resident advisor top 100 2015, Nina Kraviz, tINI, Margaret Dygas and Nicole Moudaber (who have all played Sankeys). Surely there needs to be a more equal balance with males than it currently is?”

If you are a female DJ, living in Ibiza, and want the chance to win a residency at Sanleys Sabados, send an email to David direct, david@sankeys.info, no later than 10pm on Sunday January 31 (David’s Mothers birthday), including your CV, a two hour mix and a paragraph on why you should be invited to join the Sankeys Sabados all star female residency team. As well as the residency, the winners also receive a full time management contract to play a certain amount of dates within the Sankeys Group of clubs including Sankeys Manchester, Sankeys Warehouse Manchester, Sankeys London Official & Sankeys Tokyo due to open later in 2016. Last word on the competition rightly goes to David Vincent; “Please note this offer has nothing to do with my involvement in the world’s biggest upcoming DJ competition Burn Residency programme 2016, where I am scheduled to judge once again for the fourth year running to win a residency at Sankeys Ibiza. I’d like to thank Junior Brown for his initial idea that we should support female DJs on the island more when I announced I was doing this new Saturday night winter project. Good Luck Ladies, it’s payback time.”
