An Afternoon In Salinas

Nestled in the heart of the Salinas Natural Reserve is Boutique Hostal Salinas, one of the true gems of the island, an 11-room boutique hotel – all rooms with en suite, satellite TV, air con, telephone, mini bar and safe, with 8 of them enjoying private terraces of varying sizes – that genuinely feels like a home away from home. The team behind the hotel has put everything into making the place a warm and friendly retreat for its many clients and you can feel the love the minute you walk into the beautiful garden area. The concept is five years old and has steadily added to its facilities year on year, making it the perfect base for your Ibiza adventure. From the simple elegance of the individually designed rooms, the vibrant Lo Cura lounge and the new pool, a memorable experience awaits. Todays visit, however, is all about the restaurant and in particular the magician that calls the kitchen home, chef Daniel Gastalver. We have been invited by co-owners Anita, David and Duesi to check out his genius…

Daniel Gastalver is part of the new breed of Spanish chefs who focus on good product, the finest ingredients sourced from local markets and suppliers resulting in distinctive flavours free from hidden additives without the need for fancy garnishes who are taking the culinary world by storm. Born in Seville, where his father was famous for inventing new dishes and flavour combinations in the family restaurant, he trained in San Sebastian before heading to Barcelona and eventually to Ibiza, where he has adopted his father’s style in his own kitchen. Today, Daniel is presenting his A la Carte menu to a group of hungry Ibiza press types and after he has described what he will be cooking for us, we can’t wait to tuck in.

The afternoon begins with a quick tour of the Boutique Hostal, the eleven rooms and the facilities that surround it are very rarely empty, it remains one of the islands best kept secrets but the number of returning clients is testament to the experience to be had here. A stones throw from the stunning beaches of Salinas and Es Cavallet and minutes into the heart of the clubbing action but far enough away to have a completely relaxing holiday, it is the ideal spot. The garden area offers a tranquil place to enjoy the long hot summer days and Lo Cura lounge is a great place to kick back and enjoy a refreshing cocktail and with some cool parties popping up now and again you don’t always have to leave the hotel to get your groove on! Boutique Hostal Salina has also recently introduced ‘Once Upon A Time’, a magical market with a combination of exhibitors, street artists, performers and DJ sets. The next market is on July 14.

Everything about Boutique Hostal Salinas contributes to the unique atmosphere of the venue, none more so than the personal touch from the staff and owners. This is a labor of love for them and whether they are making sure your stay is a comfortable one, giving you tips on where the best parties are or driving you to the airport when your cab doesn’t turn up, they provide a real family feel. Sitting round the big tables in the garden area listening to Chef Daniel talk us through his menu, I can’t help feel like I’m part of one big dysfunctional press family! First up is the starters and we have tuna tartar, foie gras sauteed in fresh orange juice, scallops cooked in butter and caviar with wasabi, red bean hummus with edible pansy garnish. The table goes quiet, a very unusual occurrence for a group of news hungry journos and snappers, testament to the quality of the food and the glances and raised eyebrows and gentle nodding around the table as the flavours explode in our mouths becomes our method of communication for the next couple of hours.

The family theme continues as big dishes of food are placed along the table for everyone to help themselves, this must be how the Waltons felt at dinner time. The next wave of delicious food includes broad bean salad with Iberico ham and mint, ‘Cohuse’ salad (tomato, basil and Iberian ham), green gazpacho with bruchette of tomato and mozzarella and marinated Iberian pork carpaccio. I don’t have the most educated palate on the planet and the combinations contained within these dishes is probably inspired but what I can tell you is that they taste amazing and looking around at the clean shared bowls and plates, the consensus is universal. As the wine continues to flow freely and we discuss how blessed we all are to be doing what we do, the next wave of treats head our way but not before Duesi pops out of the kitchen with a monster cut of beef and drops it at Charlie Chester’s place. He does the noble thing and cuts it up for the Lucky Life crew and myself to have a preview of what is to come. This is a contender for best steak on the island without a doubt. As we demolish it the next serving arrives, including cod baked in salt with a tomato and mint sauce, Galacian sirloin steak strips and grilled Ibicenco prawns.

The feast is fittingly rounded off with a couple of dessert choices, chocolate and raspberry mousse and lemon sorbet with dark rum and basil, a sweet and delicious end to one of the best afternoons of the season so far. Boutique Hostal Salinas is a great place to chill out and wile away a few hours, its one of those places where you feel at home the instant you enter and while the popularity of the rooms means you have to plan well in advance to stay there, the restaurant provides the perfect reason to head to Salinas. Chef Daniel has taken the classic elements of Mediterranean cuisine, the finest ingredients from local producers, given the whole thing his own twist and created a menu that is simple, unpretentious and most importantly delicious. The Restaurant Boutique Hostal Salinas is open seven days a week from 14.30; get it in your diary.
