Friday December 1 sees the release of ‘Ibiza Classics’, the follow up to the hugely successful ‘Classic House’ from Pete Tong with The Heritage Orchestra, directed by Chris Wheeler and conducted by Jules Buckley. ‘Classic House’ occupied the number one spot all over the world in 2016, a landmark release that saw Pete Tong rework Ibiza club anthems with an orchestra, leading to a high-profile tour around the globe and selling, to date, 270,000 copies. ‘Ibiza Classics’ is inspired by that tour experience and the dance pioneer’s four decades of industry knowledge.

Having captured the imagination of clubbers of all ages, all over the world, with his classical twist on celebrated club tracks, Pete Tong understood that it was something that had to continue; “Watching Jules and these fantastically classically-trained musicians and this arena full of people partying, I was thinking, ‘We need to do this again’”, says Tong. “The question was: how could we do it again, but differently?” The short answer sees the release of ‘Ibiza Classics’, an album that sought to capture the essence of the one-off show at London’s Royal Albert Hall to mark 20 years of BBC Radio 1 Ibiza coverage. If there’s an industry black book that compares to Pete Tong’s we’ve yet to see it, so he reached out to the likes of Seal, Craig David, Candi Staton and Jesse Ware as well as new talent Becky Hill and Raye, to name only a few, giving the new album a featured artist focus.

‘Ibiza Classics’ came to life in producer Mark Ralph’s West London studio and in programmer Dennis White’s Putney studio explains Pete Tong. “They were like the Creative Control Centres of the thing. Last time it was performance first, record second, but this time I started the project from a programming and arrangement perspective with Mark and Dennis. Then we had the Heritage Orchestra’s band going into the studio and playing on top of what we did and adding in the live elements.” Jules Buckley delivered the final piece of the puzzle, arranging the tracks for the wider, 65-piece orchestra, before recording them over five days at the Air Studios in London. There are a series of dates planned, following up on last year’s sold-out UK arena tour and visits to Australia and LA’s Hollywood Bowl. Always at the forefront of the scene driving things forward, whether that’s through his championing of new music on the radio, producing new music or working global dancefloors from the booth, Pete Tong is not one for standing still! You get the feeling he is having as much fun as he has ever had taking dance music on this classical journey. “It feels appropriate to be celebrating the legacy of dance music,” he says. “This is the soundtrack to so many people’s lives.”
