Pan-Pot Headline Float Your Boat Party

Posted on July 11, 2014

Words: Abigail Lowe.

Berlin-based techno duo Pan-Pot are named after a simple piece of studio equipment, but don’t let that fool you, this pair pump out tracks laden with complexity that takes you on a relentless journey to the dark, murky depths of techno. Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Benedix met at university 10 years ago, and it’s here that they forged their relationship and honed their skills in the production of music and became master manipulators of sounds. Tuesday July 15 sees them headline the Float Your Boat pre-party for Carl Cox Music Is Revolution, we caught up with the duo to talk about the explosion of the techno scene, how Ibiza compares to Berlin and what we can expect from their performance on the boat…

Your style incorporates influences from many different genres, how would you describe it to someone who hadn’t heard it before?
Tassilo: Our music is a mix of techno and house with added darker elements, and we like to use vocals because it adds a human touch.

What do you mean by darker elements; what can people expect from a Pan-Pot gig?
Tassilo: Heavy basslines, a climax, a good variety of house and techno tracks and, of course, fun!

Would you say your tracks are based more on the collaboration of sounds than emotion?
Tassilo: Both elements have an impact on our creative process. Music is art therefore emotion plays a big role in defining the overall mood.
Thomas: The production of sounds has a more technical function but is the tool to deliver certain kind of emotions.

How does it work as a duo – do you each take control of different things or is it always a collaborative effort?
Thomas: We have a good organisation of our work. Usually we spend most of the time together but we also work on our own and then come together to share our ideas afterwards.

You met at university more than 10 years ago, do you need to share ideas or are you at the stage now where you finish each other’s sentences?
Thomas: Oh yes. That happens pretty often and we laugh about it a lot. We know each other very well. It’s like a long-term affair but even better!

When you’re in the studio do you go in with a specific idea in mind or is it more about allowing things to happen and progress naturally?
Thomas: It depends. Sometimes you wake up in the morning with an idea and run to the studio to put it down. Other times – when we work on remixes for instance – we experiment with sounds and different elements in a more spontaneous way.

So is there anything that you find particularly inspiring when you’re creating or remixing a track?
Thomas: Current life experiences and, of course, other artists’ music – it’s not all limited to techno.

How do you think your sound has evolved since you first started out?
Tassilo: We’ve adopted a more open-minded vision of techno now – we include more experimental elements. It’s definitely a more versatile sound, and it’s more exciting to work on and play with.

Did you always want to be DJs?
Thomas: No definitely not! We both had regular jobs before but luckily we got into techno and followed this road.

What are your most proud of in your career to date?
Thomas: The X-tour celebrating Pan-Pot’s 10-year anniversary. It made us realise how long we’ve been working together and how much our lives and music have changed since our career started.

The last few years have seen an explosion of hugely popular techno nights on the island, what is it about techno that you think is touching a chord at the moment?
Tassilo: Techno is energy and strength. It implies a passionate connection with the body and the sound. It’s the rhythm of a lot of people’s modern life, or maybe it’s just taking a break from normal life for a few hours.

You’re from Berlin, which has a renowned music scene, is there a big difference between a Berlin and an Ibiza crowd?
Tassilo: In Berlin the parties are smaller and more intimate; there’s a more compact crowd. The party atmosphere in Ibiza is more impressive, but they both have their good sides.

And you’re playing on the ‘Float Your Boat’ boat parties this summer; will they have a different vibe again?
Thomas: The party atmosphere changes in summer so we will definitely deliver a sound that’s more in line with an outdoor experience and people’s mood. But in the end it will always be PAN-POT!

Give us a taster of what a ‘Float Your Boat’ party will be like.
Tassilo: There’ll be sun, a clear sound system, music creating good vibes and people being nice to each other.

When was the first time you came to Ibiza?
Tassilo: Our first gig was in 2011 for Cocoon at Amnesia. We played with Loco Dice and Sven Väth. It was our first ever, and only live performance!

What’s been your most memorable night in Ibiza to date?
Thomas: The afterparty with Sven Väth. It was at someone’s villa in the mountains somewhere with lots of people we didn’t know. It was crazy fun!
