Music Is Revolution For CatznDogz

Posted on July 13, 2014

Words: Lena Kochetkova.

Polish duo Catz ‘n Dogz make their debut at Carl Cox’s Music Is Revolution party in Ibiza this summer. Grzegorz Demianczuk & Wojciech Taranczuk, better known as Greg & Voitek, are featured in RA’s Top 100 DJs poll, scored a residency in Watergate club in Berlin, compiled an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 and released a bunch of major hits on their Pets Recording label, such as “Entrance Song” by Eats Everything and Rachel Row’s “Follow The Step” (KiNK and Justin Martin remixes). Their friendship with the plump charming Eats Everything grew into Catz Eats Dogz collaboration, and their back-to-back-to-back sets are among the most anticipated DJ performances of Ibiza 2014. With a new festival project WOODED in the pipeline and a measured yet cream-of-the-crop release schedule for their new vinyl only label Step, Catz ‘n Dogz never fail to deliver. In anticipation of their debut at Carl Cox’ night at Space on July 22, we talked with the guys about their first ever gig in this club, about their method of finding an approach to every crowd, and the tracks they put their bets on for this summer.

Space Ibiza turns 25 years this year. Do you remember your first encounter with the club? Did you come there as punters or as DJs?
We played there for the first time in 2011, so not that long ago. We played for Native Instruments in the upstairs Red Room, the party was crazy! We finally checked out the club and the year after we played on the terrace. That was still one of the best parties we’ve ever played!

For many people Tuesday with Carl Cox are an eternal value of Ibiza: you go there every year and you know exactly what to expect in terms of sound and in terms of quality. What does this party mean for you personally?
Well, of course Carl is a true ‘legend’ and has the most amazing history in electronic music and DJing. All of this is felt and seen in the party. You can see why it is such a successful night. The brand is so strong too. Carl Cox is still one of our favourite DJs and was one of the very first who we listened to when we were young. Classic mix tapes! We are so excited to make our debut for him.

Playing on Space Terrace on July 22 you will be going against Carl Cox and Marco Carola in La Discoteca. What kind of music are you going to spin? Will you try to match the sound of Discoteca, or will you offer a very diverse alternative?
We will definitely be going through a house and techno mixture, playing our favourite tunes from this year and records we have dug from the basement that you probably have forgotten about. We love to mix different styles and years and create a story that’s gonna fit this party.

Which tracks and remixes of your own are you going to play in Ibiza most often throughout the season?
Definitely we’re gonna play our remix of Thomas Schumacher’s HUSH, which was a pretty big hit this winter. We’re also gonna test a lot of new tracks we did for our forthcoming album as we’re still working on it. We made two new tracks for our vinyl only label Step and they are very ‘Ibiza’ in sound, so hopefully they’re going to work great. Also a remix for dOP we did recently, and another one for Kim Ann Foxman.

Will we be able to hear you play back-to-back with Eats Everything this summer?
Yes, we’re gonna play together in Amnesia for his Edible party in August, and then Cocoon in September. We just came back from Garden Festival in Croatia where we hosted an Edible vs Pets Recordings (our label) party. We were playing classic tracks back-to-back for four hours at the after party, and four hours on the main festival stage. We’re good friends with Dan and it’s always a nice experience for all of us, as our styles have different roots. Dan plays more UK classics and we play more European sounds. Usually we don’t know half of the tracks that Dan is playing and vice versa.

Apart from big clubs, will you appear at any smaller size events in Ibiza? Any beach clubs, maybe?
For sure something is gonna happen. Playing the small clubs is always more spontaneous.

Can you name any tracks from Pets label that have huge chances to become massive summer anthems?
Definitely the new EP from Eats Everything, with two edits that he made. They are huge! We’re definitely gonna play them all summer. And the new Beesemount Soundsystem EP.

And what about your new label Step? How many releases and events do you have planned for the next few months?
We plan to do one release every quarter, so there are four steps every year. We decided that the label is gonna be vinyl only, and the third step of this year is gonna be from Andre Kronert. He’s an amazing producer using only hardware and creating perfect techno tracks. We’ve already featured Gianni Amoroso with our remix as 3 Channels. The fourth step is gonna be a Catz ‘n Dogz EP with two house tool tracks. For every release we are doing a label night at Berlin’s Chalet club.

They say every day is Friday in Ibiza. Do you feel the difference between Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday etc. on the island? Or does it all merge into the whole summer of party non-stop?
Ha-ha, last year we were living here. Some people also say that the island makes you crazy. Luckily we didn’t go crazy, but we believe that it can happen pretty easily. We agree that it’s Friday everyday and sometimes you’re lucky to have a Sunday but you never know when. The island is beautiful and is worth exploring the small hidden beaches and the north. Also, so much great food. We miss it already!

2013 was one of the toughest seasons in Ibiza in terms of so many new parties being launched and then sadly failing. Do you see summer 2014 as a healthier environment for artists and promoters?
It’s hard for us to talk about the promotors as we’re not doing any parties on the island. But last year a lot of people were saying that it was one of the hardest seasons and most of the DJs were playing everywhere. The residency we had with Dirtybird guys was very good, and we can’t really say that we felt it was worse than the year before. But some parties were struggling a lot to get the crowds. This year we decided to play a bit less, and we’ve seen some other DJ friends are doing the same. There’s still more and more people coming to Ibiza and it’s getting more popular, so we think it’s just gonna be better every year. It’s still one of the best places on earth to party.

We heard that you’ve been working on a festival project in Poland. How is this going on?
Yes, we played so many festivals and open air events and we have so many ideas, that we decided we would like to build something ourselves. The Polish scene is still so underrated and there are a lot of people who love the music. We decided that we were gonna start with a new project called WOODED. It’s in Wroclaw which is gonna be the European capital of culture in 2016. We hosted a small first party this year in June, a collaboration with some Berlin based friends, DJs and architects. We promote local Polish food, no branding, recycling and a positive atmosphere. For 2015 we are planning to make it much bigger and work with different groups from Germany, UK and Poland.
