Mercury Rises At Pikes Hotel

There are some parties in Ibiza that can only be described as hidden gems. They don’t shout at you from giant billboards and no promoters are parading the White Isle’s beaches to hand out wristbands for discounted entry – in fact, most of them are free and accessible simply by getting your name on the list. Yet it is those smaller, lesser-known events that often have the most charisma, quirks and atmosphere, encouraging individuality of both their DJs and partygoers and offering a wide spectrum of amazing music.

Amongst them, DJ Harvey’s Mercury Rising residency at Pikes Hotel is the diamond in the crown. Returning for a second season on the island, the party became one of the most popular events amongst those in the know last summer thanks to Harvey’s eclectic sets and his connection with the audience, as well as the famed house party feel of the legendary venue. Tucked away between the fields and wood-covered hills just outside of San Antonio, the authentic Ibizan finca – now known as Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes Hotel – has provided a hideaway to party in hidden from prying eyes since the 1980s. Most famously, Freddie Mercury hosted his 41st birthday bash at the boutique abode, and Harvey’s night is paying tribute to the late Queen frontman not only in name, but also in spirit. Every Monday, the iconic DJ is taking over the booth for a whole night of the signature sound that has elevated him to cult status in the industry.

When we arrive at 1am, the fiesta is already in full swing. Beats are drifting into our ears as we walk up the garden path that leads to a hidden backyard, via which the intimate party rooms – formerly Freddie Mercury’s suite – are accessed, and it’s hard not to feel like we are starring in our very own version of THAT music video. (Do we really need to say which one? coughClubTropicanacough) The fairy-lit outdoor area, with its many lounge beds, wooden shed bar and upside down flamingoes hanging from a tree, is filled with revelers, many of which are well-known faces on the island and in the music industry. They are a stylish bunch, of course, and at Pikes individuality is encouraged, so there are some amazing outfits to be seen. And if you ever feel like you’re OOTD is not en point, you can always hope for an invite into Sonny’s treasure trove of a fancy dress room. Yep, there is a reason why we love this place.

Beckoned to ‘come further in’, we obediently do as we are told and step into the packed main room, where DJ Harvey is conducting what can only be described as a love-in. Dropping one funky tune after the next, everyone is up and dancing while adoringly watching the master do his thing in the booth. Known for his flair with dance music’s older genres and slower tempos, the beat is one that might not have you jumping around like a lunatic, but an infectious and addictive one that will keep you steadily bopping along and bringing out your coolest moves – that’s what we like to think anyway! Instead of chopping and changing, Harvey played out every song much to the delight of the whooping crowd. His set was a joyous mix of soulful and funky house tunes, delivered at a teasing pace and with international influences – we detected a strong French vibe reminiscent of Daft Punk – and partygoers were lapping it up. With only five more dates to go, we strongly suggest you get yourself on that list and enjoy an eclipse with Mercury!
