Mambo In The Mix is one of our favourite nights of the summer, it’s a fun concept with a serious message, raising awareness and funds for the Ibiza and Formentera Red Cross. We drop into San Antonio early and grab a table on the Mint Terrace, just on the edge of Mambo, where we can see and hear what is going on. The action has already started, Duane Harden is on the mic, the sun is starting to go down and the early shift of DJs is already in place at their respective work stations. As we walk around the front of Mambo, Sneak is at the grill, in charge of the first batch of burgers and hotdogs, having sampled the big man’s grilling on previous occasions, we are tempted to have a burger on the way to our table for dinner! Judge Jules is mixing a Mojito as the bar starts to fill up. This is the third Mambo in The Mix event and the dream team that has pledged to drop in and give up its time for the cause reads like the best dance music festival ever!

The Mambo DJ booth has played host to countless international DJs and producers and has been responsible for numerous Ibiza ‘moments’, tonight it is at the mercy of the public, donating for the chance to play a tune. Rather fittingly, Javier, owner of Cafe Mambo, plays the sunset tune, Pavarotti’s Nesun Dorma comes to a dramatic climax as the sun dips below the horizon and the sunset strip claps and cheers in unison, Mambo In The Mix is well and truly off and running. There’s a strong American presence to this years event, apart from Duane on the mic and Sneak on the grill, Ultra Nate drops in and delivers a live rendition of ‘Free’, much to the delight of the Mambo crowd, this is an evening where anything can and usually does happen. House legends Todd Terry and Junior Sanchez are also take turns behind the bar, supporting the cause, all wearing the special Mambo in The Mix T’s that have been produced specially and that are also on sale to boost the fund total.

All the money spent at the bar manned by the superstar DJs is going into the pot so Duane, fellow compere Woody Van Eyden, Ultra Nate and even the Nervo girls – who shout over the mic “lets get drunk for charity” – are all encouraging us to hit the bar, So you know it makes sense! As we sit in the terrace opposite Mint, the club party parades pass by, Flower Power makes for a colourful precession, interacting with the crowd as it weaves its way along the strip, the State Of Trance girls look spectacular as the march through and the Defected In The House parade dances its way along, clearly enjoying the Breach ‘Jack’ track that is bursting from the sound system. Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike have swapped the huge outdoor stage they have been used to all summer for the Mambo bar and are now taking orders, as is Mark Knight, fresh from the latest installment of Toolrom Knights at Booom! Ibiza the night before. Simon Dunmore, Defected Records boss, drops in and looks like a natural behind the bar, ahead of Defected In The House in Booom later tonight. The ladies are getting in on the action too, with Anna Tur and Monica Mira adding to the talented work force. It’s like a who’s who of the Ibiza summer behind the bar, Cristian Varela took Blue Marlin Ibiza back to the roots of house music this summer with his Blue Nineties residency but tonight he is very much back in the present, pulling pints for charity. UNER and Technasia go back to back behind the bar as the donations flood in.

While the bar shift has changed two or three times throughout the night already, Sneak is still manning the grill, although he does get some help from DJ Oliver and Reboot. The latest member of the public to become a superstar DJ for the night drops Armand van Helden’s ‘You Don’t Know Me’, and Duane Harden delivers an impromptu live performance that has the terrace on its feet and dancing. It’s a vibrant atmosphere and one that shows the caring side of the dance community. Coming together for a great charity and giving something back, while, at the same time, delivering another amazing might on the island for everyone around the bar. The totals are still being counted so watch this space to see how much was raised on the night, but for those that couldn’t make it to mambo on the night and want to make a donation, head to mambointhemix.org to do so. All of the team at Cafe Mambo deserves great credit for Mambo In The Mix and with the help of the international DJ community raised much needed funds for the Ibiza and Formentera Red Cross while having some fun in the process. We are looking forward to next year already.
