Le Freak Cest Chic

Posted on September 5, 2013

The word legend is banded about all too readily these days and none more so than on the clubbing capital, where legendary status is apparently attained after stringing together two seasons in a row! As we head to the heart of San Antonio and the Ibiza Rocks Hotel we can’t hide our excitement about the pending performance from Nile Rodgers and Chic, a true music legend, in ever sense of the word. Nile Rodgers has been on and off the island regularly in the last couple of years, making appearances at IMS 2012 and 13 and sharing his amazing story with a packed auditorium, hanging on his every word, loving his impromptu guitar playing and general information about a time long since past that had a significant bearing on the scene as we know it today. More recently, Nile Rodgers showed he still has the ability to deliver a global smash record when he collaborated with Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams on ‘Get Lucky’. This is a man that has worked with some of the biggest pop stars of our time and he’s bringing his band to the stage in Ibiza Rocks and we can’t quite believe it!

Having witnessed the mayhem that can ensue whenever Ibiza Rocks invites one of the iconic bands of the last few generations to play the famous stage, we decided to get down early. With virtually no waiting at the door we are inside the venue and it seems that we were not the only ones with the forethought, the arena is almost full already and Skream is running through a slick disco set. Standing next to the young DJ as he drops some chunky disco and a few house classics, is Nile Rodgers, vibing with the huge crowd, getting some pics for his own album and grooving along to the music. Lesson for the stroppy bands that sometimes make an appearance, here is one of the most influential musicians of our time and instead of sitting in his dressing room working his way through a rider, he’s on stage having fun and being part of the party. Skream is clearly enjoying the attention, bobbing about behind the decks, mixing effortlessly between ‘Relight My Fire’ and ‘The Bomb’, dropping his own tune in there as he does so. The crowd reaction is better than we’ve witnessed in the venue before, clearly everyone is buzzing on the imminent arrival of one of the biggest bands of the last 50 years.

Not long after ten o’clock the announcement comes over the speaker system and Chic takes to the stage, this is a bit earlier than the normal headline acts but when you consider the amount of hits the band has had on their own and add the amount of collaborations Nile Rodgers has had with other pop stars, they could probably have played all night! The crowd in front of the stage erupts, all the balconies go berserk and everyone on the VIP balcony stretches a neck to get a glimpse of the band, looking resplendent all in white. Nile Rogers says hello, casually delivers the first couple of bars of ‘Everybody Dance’, at which the place erupts again and we’re off. It’s a strange feeling to hear songs that you’ve listened to throughout your adolescence being brought to life right in front of you, there must have been a few double takes just to make sure that we are all actually witnessing Nile Rodgers and Chic in the flesh.

The following two hours is over in what feels like minutes as Chic runs through all of their big hits and a few that Nile Rogers was instrumental in, from ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’, ‘Le Freak’, ‘I Want Your Love’, ‘My Forbidden Lover’, you forget how many smash hits they were responsible for. In the middle of the set Nile Rogers explains that he has collaborated with a few artists we will know and on some of the biggest tracks of the relevant decade and that they’d like to play some now if we didn’t mind. Didn’t mind? We could have listened to them all night! At which point they launch into ‘We Are Family’ and the place erupts yet again. See the pattern yet? Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’, Duran Duran’s ‘Notorious’ and probably the biggest cheer of the night, David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’. The atmosphere inside Ibiza Rocks is amazing, there are smiling faces everywhere, people are singing and dancing where they stand and the crowd that has been used to moshing it with the likes of Pendulum in the past is enjoying one massive love-in as they get a taste of the world’s iconic performers.

Before the end Nile Rodgers introduces the band and each member takes a well deserved round of applause before finishing up with himself as the crowd tries to rip a hole in the sky. He thanks the crowd for showing its appreciation and tells us one more story about how Chic is all about ‘Good Times’, prompting a delirious roar as he proceeds to play the famous loop as some members of the crowd are invited up on to the stage to join in the party, it’s the perfect end to a perfect show and a bit of Rappers Delight thrown in between verses is also well received. Ibiza Rocks has a knack of bringing the right band back at just the right time and as they get set to leave the stage Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ blasts out of the sound system and the crowd is off again!
