Maintaining its continuous support of the arts, the stylish ME Ibiza hotel is the temporary home of a series of ten canvases by Jonathon David Wilks, a collection entitled ‘Hidden Depths’. The stunning display of acrylic paintings is available for public view for a period of two weeks from now until mid-September. We took some time out of our busy summer schedule to view the works for ourselves in the beautiful location of the venue’s RADIO rooftop terrace.

Jonathon David Wilks is an English artist who made Ibiza his home many years ago. Recognised for his work with acrylics as well as fine art photography, Jonathon was asked to create a new series of works by ME Ibiza, a hotel also well known for its own contemporary art and design installations. ‘Hidden Depths’ was born out of five months of intense reflection by the creative.

Jonathon explained the majority of this time was spent alone in his studio at his home. A period of ultimate self-expression, each piece is a reflection of himself, an unveiling of hidden layers: some good, some bad, but all accumulating in his whole self. He described it as “organised chaos, the energy of the paintings is a bit chaotic but it’s all in place.” Each work was produced by building up multiple layers of acrylic paint within a predefined structure prior to a final, semi-obscuring or concealing layer of solid colour being applied. This process effectively creates depth, shadows and consequently a sense of movement. The subtle blend of colours and the varying textures are best viewed from a multitude of angles to appreciate the effect of the light bouncing off the canvas, revealing the hidden patterns and forcing the viewer to take a second look.

“What interests me is ‘the second look’… whether that is the way a painting looks different when viewed from another angle, or a print that ‘makes your brain work’ to decipher opposing images – a phrase which keeps emerging is : Hidden Depths,” he said. We certainly felt the benefit of taking time out to enjoy this beautiful exhibition in the breath-taking setting of the 360-degree rooftop bar with its vast views over S’Argamassa Bay. A big thank you to Jonathon and the ME Ibiza for this gentle but overdue reminder to stop for a moment and take a look not only into the artist’s colourful psyche, but also our own soul.
