Jon Rundell Set For FYB Debut

Posted on July 27, 2014

Words: Lena Kochetkova

Ibiza knows Jon Rundell as a hero of the Carl Cox Music Is Revolution party, every summer he plays in Space on Tuesday night, becoming an integral part of Carl’s team and a steady purveyor of sound that is all about quality and not momentary fashion. His production skills have been acknowledged by such labels as MB Elektronics, Respekt Recordings, Octopus Black, Suara and Pornographic, but in addition to that, he also runs his own label Etch that serves as an outlet for his creativity and artistic freedom. Just an example of what kind of music Rundell produces: you probably remember that summer when the whole Ibiza was singing along to Mark Knight’s remix on ‘You’ve Got The Love’ by Florence & The Machine… Well, it was Jon Rundell’s track ‘Knick Knack’ that knocked Florence & Mark out from the top position of the Beatport chart. But it’s not the biggest trace that Jon has left in the history of dance music. The biggest was probably the re-launch of Carl Cox’s historic imprint Intec in the digital form, after Rundell was appointed its A&R and Label Manager. He is also at the helm of the Intec, one-off event that take place in Space every year, just before the big opening of the Revolution season. July 29 will see the multi-talented artist making his debut on Float The Boat, the official boat pre-party for Carl Cox at Space and a big innovation of the 2014 season. Anticipating that trip, we talked with Jon about his very special connection with the Playa d’en Bossa superclub, the new artistic discoveries of Intec and the terrific line-ups of the infamous techno Tuesdays.

How have been Float Your Boats doing so far? Regularly selling out, aren’t they?
To be honest, I’ve not been over yet while they have been running, but from the pictures I’ve seen going up from other DJs that have played so far, it for sure looks that way, as well as a lot of fun!

What do you personally like the most about the boat parties?
What’s not to like? Sunshine, clear sea, good music. I get to play some music I don’t often get the chance to play, which is a good thing to do from time to time.

When playing at a boat party, do you play more or less the same music as in the club? Or do you switch to a lighter and more ‘summer-style’ sound?
I switch for sure. You have to remember that this is people’s afternoon and that they are here to relax before the night ahead. I like to go up and down with the way I play, give them a little to get them dancing, then take it down for a while, before building it back up again. As a DJ, it’s more challenging that way; it makes sure you really prepare hard for it. Towards the end I’ll always pump it up a bit more and leave people wanting more for their night ahead.

The motto of the Carl Cox 2014 party is ‘Music Is Revolution’. Do you think music is still revolutionising the world?
It always has really. Music is one of the most powerful things on the planet, no matter what style you’re into. It’s the soundtrack to our lives, the good memories, the bad memories. It’s around us all the time. Certain types of music have had a greater impact on society in terms of movements and culture within generations for certain. Whether they made a real impact with the powers that be at the top (I mean government) we will never really know, but it feels good to know you have at least been heard.

How was the Pure Intec party at Space this year, which moments of it are you especially proud of?
It was another great party, thanks, we couldn’t have asked for more from the DJs again. This time we invited Slam and Harvey McKay, so there was a strong Scottish presence and they did not disappoint. Slam have been pivotal within the techno scene, and Harvey has been making some fantastic records, some of which we recently released. Then we had Marco Bailey, who has been part of the label for so long and been so good alongside us each time.

As the A&R of Intec, have you discovered any new extremely talented artists recently?
We are always on the look out, and there have been some good developments lately from artists that have been sending us their music for a while now. Artists like Ferhat Albyrak, Chris Count, Joe Brunning, Alex Mine, Daryl Stay, Drumcomplex & Roel Salemink and more are really stepping, up and we are excited to be behind them all.

And what about your label Etch? Are you planning to release only your own music on it, or will there be releases by some other artists soon?
Etch has always been an outlet for me, it’s there for me to experiment (if I wish) or to just release the tracks I’ve made. I can’t release on Intec every month or so, so this is why it was set up. I enjoy the production process and I believe in what I’m making. It may not be fashionable, but it seems to go down well enough. And I’ve got my hands full as it is with Intec to be doing the same with Etch, to be honest.

Space Ibiza is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. What does this club mean to you, how special is your connection with Space?
For me personally in Ibiza, it’s been the club. I have a strong connection with it. It’s the first proper club I ever played in on the island, and it’s pretty much the only one I play each summer. For it to have reached 25 years and given so many people such good memories is a fantastic achievement.

Regarding the line-ups for Carl Cox’ party at Space and Float Your Boat pre-parties, which artists are you especially happy to play on the same day/night with?
I’m really looking forward to checking out Masters At Work next week: it’s not often I get to hear them play and they have contributed so much to the house scene. In September I’m pretty excited to be playing alongside Ben Sims. We have shared the decks a few times over the years and it’s always been great fun, what he can do with records still amazes me to this day. I’ll also for certain head to the terrace to check out Josh Wink and Ben Klock too.
