Ibiza Rocks The 1975

Posted on June 10, 2014

Get ready for an evening of tunes you won’t be able to shake from your head. Most bands shuffle shyly into the start of their careers. It takes them time to develop the swaggering self-confidence of a bunch of rock stars capable of filling a stage with their sheer presence, if they ever do. But The 1975 who come to conquer Ibiza Rocks this Wednesday June 11 seem to have burst into the world as a fully-formed stadium act. They proved this pedigree last July when they supported the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park, less than a year after the release of their first EP. They’d already performed similar duties with Muse at London’s Emirates Stadium. Then, last September, their debut, self-titled album came straight into the UK charts at number one and number eight in the US Billboard rock chart. In a couple of weeks time they’ll take their rightful on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.

Of course, as with most ‘overnight sensations’ the band spent years experimenting with their act in their bedrooms and upstairs rooms in pubs. That’s when they shook off their shoe-staring indy image. But, the most important change in their development was marked by the shift of their original drummer Matt Healy to front-stage vocals. He’s a natural, possessing a rare, seemingly unforced, stadium-filling charisma, which brings to mind nothing less than a young Michael Hutchence. Throughout their shows he’s a constant ball of energy, dancing, cajoling and, of course, singing. Behind him, the band regularly switch instruments with a skill that cannot have been quickly learned. The 1975 sound dips spectacularly into a pick and mix from the history of rock from old-skool funk to modern R&B, all passed through their guitar-based power-pop sensibility. Believe me it works. Although, more accurately they should, perhaps, be called “The 1985”, had they based their name on their music rather than on a number Matt found scribbled in the back of a book.

Matt has also had an interesting upbringing, not entirely untarnished by British tabloid newspapers. His father is TV actor Pat Healy and his mother Denise Welch, who might be happier to be known as “Matt’s mum” rather than, “her off Coronation Street and Loose Women who went off the rails and married a toy boy”. It doesn’t stop there. She also revealed recently that her son was writing songs for One Direction, not perhaps the best thing for his rock credibility, although the Vaccines’ Justin Young, Pharrell Williams and Good Charlotte are apparently also working with the X Factor boy band. And, funnily enough, the Ibiza Rocks support band for tonight, Swim Deep, has also been compared to Simon Cowell’s worldwide chart-toppers. It’s only a little unfair. The tuneful representatives of B-Town, Birmingham’s now burgeoning music scene, bring a jangling sound of summer that’s entirely suited to a sunny day in Ibiza. Check out their debut album “Where The Heaven Are We?” Next week Ibiza Rocks features another artist whose first album went straight to number one, John Newman, whose blue-eyed nu-soul voice first came to prominence on Rudimental’s ‘Feel the Love’ a few months before his own massive hit, ‘Love Me Again’. That’s after W.A.R. poolside at Ibiza Rocks on Friday with Redlight, DJ EZ and Ms Dynamite.
