Monday night marked the opening of Martin Garrix’s Multiply residency at Hï Ibiza. Bringing The Him, Justin Mylo, The Bassjackers, Cloonee and Thomas Jack along with him for the first night, the young and impossibly successful DJ set the tone for the coming weeks with a wild opener.

The season in Ibiza is well underway and you can certainly tell by the turnout in Hï Ibiza as the latest wave of clubbing legions packed the brand new venue. When we landed The Theatre was already coming to the boil, with Dutch duo The Him in charge of the booth, dropping a selection of hard edged electro tracks with a few commercial samples for good measure, feel-good favourites like TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’ and The Weeknd’s ‘I Can’t Feel My Face’ both generating reactions from the every growing crowd as we hurtled towards the arrival of the baby-faced headliner. The duo were completely at home in creating the perfect foundation for what would be martin garrix’s debut performsnce at his new Monday night home.

In The Club (second room), Australian deep/ tropical house DJ Thomas Jack was in charge, where pink and blue lighting gave the dancefloor a retro feel and world instrumentals and vocals added an interesting element to his set. The atmosphere was intense but there was room to dance, which is always a major plus for us. The room is not as intimidating as its giant neighbour but it does have an edge to it, which makes for the perfect foil. July has seen the temperatures soar on the island and the balmy outside air made for a brief stop in the Magic garden before we dropped back into the venue, next stop, the Theatre. While the Club was more than holding its own, we were fascinated by the build up to the main headliners appearacne and didn’t want to miss a beat.

Hï Ibiza has delivered on its promise to give clubbers an experience that they will remember, whether for you that means the craziness of the Wild Corner where resident DJs drop funk fueled sets while clubbers dance or pop in and out of the loo or the chilled vibe in the garden where conversation is king but for me, it is the magnitude of that main room, where everything seems possible. The amazing graphics that hypnotise the entire floor from behind the elevated booth and the range of effects that can light up the room like its 8am in the morning or plunge you into darkness like it 5am. All in all it combines to create one of the most vibrant atmospheres I’ve been in the middle of and when there’s one of the world’s most popular artists in attendance, anything can happen.

The dancers, who were wearing white PVC with black gaffa taped crosses placed strategically on their costumes, voluminous mesh jackets and severe, high bun hairstyles, looked space age and futuristic – almost alien-like. It seemed fitting for the intensity of the night, and finally, Martin Garrix arrived on stage, to a huge roar from the crowd, anticipation levels almost at maximum. The screen went black behind the booth, Garrix shouted out over the mic, “What’s Up Ibiza?” and lights, bass, lasers and smoke burst into action as he set off on his debut set for the brand new Monday night residency. The crowd erupted and it was a white knuckle ride from then on in. Martin Garrix might be one of the younger members of the elite international set but he has an ability to connect with his crowd, whether that is through his own music, his choice of tracks on the night and the way he built his set, taking us up before bringing us back down again as he worked his magic on an eager opening crowd. Multiply has been a popular party in Playa d’en Bossa in previous years but it feels a little different when all the action happens in after dark. It promises to be a strong summer for the Monday night party.
