Hector Set For Music Is Revolution

Posted on July 16, 2014

Words: Lena Kochetkova.

Ibiza has always been one of the coolest places on earth to discover up-and-coming DJ talents. In search for new aspiring artists in the past couple of years you couldn’t have overlooked Hector, Mexican techno talent, a part of Desolat crew and a true underground gem. Last summer you could see him play for Used & Abused in Ushuaia and tINI & the Gang in Sirocco, now Hector is upping his game and broadening his horizons even further. On July 4 of 2014 he made his debut at Music On, one of the most sought-after techno nights in Ibiza, warming up the Amnesia terrace before Marco Carola. July 22 will see Hector play for Carl Cox at Space, getting the Discoteca ready for the stellar appearance of Carl himself and again Marco Carola. You have probably had some happy moments dancing to his remix of Bounce To The Beat by Todd Terry, and in September his new Daggers EP will see the light on Overall Music featuring remixes by Livio & Roby and Guti. We called Hector when he was in Florida and asked him a few questions regarding the last time he used a CD, his new warehouse project and the famous DJ who serves him as a role model…

How was your Music On debut?
It was good, I’m so happy with it! For me Music On is one of the best parties on the island in terms of the crowd and the music. I played from 12am till almost 4am, warming up before Marco Carola. Around 1am the dancefloor was already half full, by 2am it was packed. I stayed there till the very end and was the last one to leave Amnesia.

How long did you know Marco Carola before he invited you to play at Music On?
I’ve known Marco for many years. I used to work in a record shop in London, and he used to play in fabric. When he came to the shop, I used to sell him some records, that’s how we became friends. But I’m sure Marco wouldn’t put me on his night just because I’m his friend. The thing is that he got really interested in the stuff that I’ve been doing lately, and we had played together several times, for example on Sunwaves festival and in Miami. Then he invited me to play with him on the terrace of Music On in Amnesia, and from now on I have a few other gigs planned for Music On in Miami, New York and London.

On July 22 you will be playing in Space for Carl Cox, warming up the Discoteca before Carl himself and again Marco Carola…
Again with Marco, yes! I don’t know if it’s a plan or a coincidence. As I said, we played together in many places, and this time again I’m opening for him and Carl. I’m sure it will be a crazy night! I’m a bit nervous about it, but in a positive way: I know it’s going to be an outstanding event, so I will have to play very good. I can’t allow myself just to drop bomb after bomb, because it won’t be comfortable for them to arrive and find me playing so hard. One really needs to know how to warm up before the big artists in order for them to come and play their own stuff, one has to develop his own little story for the night.

Later this season you were the first DJ to play the Flight club, in the parking area at Space opening. What were your emotions?
Yes, I was playing in the car park and I was the first DJ, but I had technical problems. It was too hot, and after the first 45 minutes the mixer started to melt from inside. We didn’t notice that straight away, so we started with changing one of the turntables, then we tried to put a new CD player – but it was not the CD player and not the turntables, it was the mixer. The set was broadcast live at Be-at TV, so it turned out to be a little bit of a disaster! You could see it all online: me being stressed, talking to the sound engineer, and the sound engineer running around… It was crazy, but it’s a part of the job, and it was not the first time that it happened.

Do you remember the first ever party that you visited in Ibiza?
I think it was Manumission in 2000. For me it was incredibly crazy, because I’d never been to Ibiza before. Just imagine: I got into the biggest club in the world, to one of the most famous parties of the island, and I’d never seen a club with so many people, with all those shows and that performance… It was quite an experience!

Do you miss those times?
I’m sure things will never be like that again. I was so happy and privileged to enjoy that part of Ibiza history when the island was really underground, really nice, some kind of hippy. The music was also incredibly cool: that was when DC10 started, when Circoloco started, when Loco Dice started. Danny Tenaglia was super amazing, Erick Morillo was so good. Afterwards it all turned into a commercial market. People today just try to make commercial parties and don’t care about the vibes. They want to make money and put no soul into their parties, and I’m sad to see this money machine working.

All the underground lovers admire tINI & the Gang party at Sands, where you also sometimes play…
I used to play for tINI, but not this year because of my crazy summer schedule. I wasn’t available for the date she wanted me at Sands, so I will have to miss it. Daytime parties in such a nice environment on the beach is something that is missing in Ibiza now.

What are your most important gigs of this summer?
Music On and Carl Cox, as we already mentioned. Then I’m doing Hyte festival in New York and Mysteryland festival in Netherlands. Also I will have a gig in Aruba with Loco Dice – I’ve never been there before, and it looks amazing.

Is it true that Loco Dice serves as the role model for the members of Desolat crew?
Of course! He’s the Papa, he’s the boss! The way his career has been growing since I got to know him is really impressive. He always cares for everyone from the crew, he is always ready to help us with some wise advice. Music-wise, he gives us an opportunity to put out our releases on Desolat. Look at him, he’s one of the most successful DJs in the industry right now. He’s still underground, but he plays at, it seems, every single festival, and each time people go crazy to the sounds of his set. Of course he is one of my role models and my mentor.

In September your new release The Dagger will see light. You created it together with Javier Carballo and Hanfry Martinez – how easy was it for you to coordinate the creative process being a trio?
Javier and Hanfry are among my closest friends and my favourite DJs and producers at the moment. I discovered their music many years ago and sent them a message on Facebook, something like: “Hey guys, I really enjoy your tracks! Do you have any more stuff?”. They replied and invited me to play at a party in Canary Islands. Javier and Hanfry have created a true family around them, they have all their friends supporting them! I stayed there for three days, and they were taking care of me as if I was one of them as well. They have their own label called Overall Music, which is where we are going to release this vinyl. We share music, I always put their tracks on my sets, compilations, mixes and podcasts. One day, when I was in Tenerife, we decided to produce a track together. We started to jam and became like one person, all the three of us were in the same channel, and this was how we made this track. It’s just one release so far, but we’ll have more soon.

How often do you have a chance to play vinyl these days?
It all depends on where I play. Many places where I try to bring vinyl have their turntables in a really bad condition, and their sound system is set up to digital and just won’t sound good. Also bringing two record bags on a plane is not so easy these days. But when I play at fabric in London, or at Club De Visionaere or Berghain or Watergate in Berlin, I will play only vinyl, no CD and no USBs. These place are still supporting vinyl, DJs and industry, they take proper care of all the equipment. If I’m on tour, it’s easier for me to bring Traktor. It doesn’t really make any difference in sound, so I don’t agree with people who complain “the sound is too digital, not vinyl!”. Look, these days if you have to play at a party, the most important thing is the music. It’s the music that needs to be the most important thing, and not USBs vs. CDs vs. vinyl vs. laptop…

When was the last time that you used a CD?
Wow! You know what, I always hated CDs. I learnt to DJ with vinyl and I always played vinyl. I worked in a record shop for many years, and it was always about vinyl there. The only way to make me use CDs was to give me some unreleased music. Once I used to write the names of the tracks on the CDs – but when I start getting drunk, I can’t remember these names, I don’t remember which is which, and it just didn’t work for me! Maybe I’m too old school for CDs!

We also heard you were planning some warehouse party project… Are the rumours true?
Yes, on September 6 I’m starting a new project called Stone Raiders, it will be a series of warehouse parties in New York. I will only be doing this in America, not bringing this party to Europe yet. I used to do similar things in London for the last ten years, where I was playing warehouse, and it was much more underground than just going to the club. We were using different locations, which we advertised on the flyer, by text or by e-mail on the day of the party directly. You could be sure that when you get to the place you would really enjoy the music – and now I’m going to repeat and recreate it!
