It is known as one of the most glamorous, flamboyant and fun parties on the White Isle and the Glitterbox 2016 season opener went off like a sparkling, funky explosion all over Space. Arriving at the famous night club in Playa d’en Bossa, we could already hear the thumping beats and powerful vocals ringing out into the night from the famous Terrace as we strolled through the car park.

The first sight that greeted us when we entered the venue was that of a partygoer clad in what appeared to be a rubber diving suit and draped in garish neon flower garlands as he navigated the crowd. Fancy dress is, of course, a huge part of the Glitterbox experience, which encourages revellers to go all out and express themselves. There were plenty of fringed capes, psychedelic leggings and sequined everything to be found on the dance floor, while a make-up stall offered the opportunity to have your face glammed up with lashings of – you guessed it – glitter.

He had promised ‘great house music, great disco records and a great time’ for the opening of the popular night and that’s exactly what we got, with one classic disco and funky house tune after the next dropping.

The fabulous posse of boys and girls animating the crowd for this funky extravaganza looked out-of-this-world fabulous in big shoulder pieces fringed with embellished tassels, reflecting the light with every move they made. Mini dresses and leotards showed off the honed dancers bodies as they strutted their stuff on stage, flirting with the crowds and showing off their moves.

The party posse didn’t need much encouragement to go wild, though; with house music hero Dimitri From Paris in the booth, Glitterbox was kicking off to feel-good classics like I Love Music By The O’Jays and To Be In Love by Masters At Work. Revelers were singing along enthusiastically and it was obvious how much everyone was enjoying the carefree, unpretentious and fun atmosphere in the room. Over in El Salon, the boudoir-style space opposite the Terrace, DJ Pippi was holding court over his own kingdom of grooves with a more intimate vibe but just as much of a feel-good factor.

Halfway through the night it was time for a very special treat as iconic house and soul singer Barbara Tucker, part of the Defected family, appeared on stage for a rousing live set. Wearing a turquoise-green wig for the occasion, she cheered the audience on to party before belting out house music favourites including the uplifting and soulful Precious Love. The legendary performer was a hard act to follow, but Kenny Dope, who was next up on the decks, had just the right strategy by taking the music into a new direction. Choosing anthems with a driving bass and an edgier vibe, he injected a new energy into the evening and geared the crowd up for the last few hours of Glitterbox fun.

At 4.45am it was time for Grammy Award nominated producer Todd Terry to shut down the house. Referred to by some as Todd The God, the DJ is one of the world’s most celebrated figures in dance music and was greeted with due respect by an uproar from the aucience. The sexy Glitterbox dancers – resplendent in huge wigs and colourful ruffles, turned out in full force to fire on the party crowd which gave their all for the final set. Glitterbox well and truly set the night alight, and with next week’s line-up featuring the almighty Basement Jaxx, you’d be a fool not to join this extravagant celebration of glorious house music.
