Located on San Antonio Bay’s bustling seafront promenade, Ocean Beach Ibiza has made a name for itself thanks to its glamorous surroundings, fun and fabulous pool parties with incredible entertainment and infectious DJ sets. However, what many island visitors don’t realise – until they try it – is that the food served in the trendy venue’s onsite restaurant is equally as spectacular and, as we have concluded many times over, able to hold its own against any restaurant on the White Isle. With the temperatures on the rise, we went for a lunch with friends this week to check out the new additions to the menu.

Open to everyone who has purchased an Ocean Beach Ibiza ticket, walking up to the reception desk through the swaying garlands of flowers that hang from tunnel arch that covers the entrance delivers the first wow factor. The team is super welcoming and friendly, and upon arrival we were led straight to one of the giant wooden tables surrounded by ‘cheeky’ chairs in the shape of a human derriere and, of course, in Ocean Beach Ibiza’s signature shade of orange.

With the funky house beats spun by gorgeous resident DJ Loeca drifting into our ears, we set about choosing a round of cocktails. Advised by our lovely waitress Pip, we chose a potent Tequila, deliciously bitter-sweet thanks to a combination of trendy Aperol and Don Julio Blanco mixed with lime juice, pineapple, agave syrup and strawberries. The Zapaca Mule, a zesty concoction with a kick of ginger, became an instant hit thanks to its spicy mix of rum, xante, pear, pepper, passion fruit, ginger beer and fresh ginger. We also tried the signature Ocean Beach, a fruity concoction with Ciroc vodka, Cointreau, strawberry, lemon, orgeat syrup and topped up with decadent cava, and, last but not least, the elegant Sea Garden made from Tanqueray 10 gin, Martini Bianco, grapefruit juice, basil and white sugar.

Putting our complete trust in the hands of head chef Luciano, who has been at the helm of the busy Ocean Beach Ibiza kitchen for seven years and has carefully curated his 30-something strong team, we let the man behind the menu choose for us. And rightly so, as looking at the restaurant’s extensive and varied card made us not only feel very hungry, but also slightly overwhelmed! Luciano told us, “We have so many different things to choose from, from sushi to Argentinian steak to vegan options. I make sure I have experts for each cuisine on my team; our sushi chef, for example, was born in my hometown in Brazil and I brought him over here. After almost 17 years on the island people know me and they know that my kitchen is fast-paced, but it’s a really good place to work.”

Without further ado, Luciano went off to send a first round of plates to our table. The first course was light and healthy, a hip Tuna Poke Bowl and what had been described by the kitchen master as ‘the best ceviche on the island’. Made with premium quality white fish, a delicately draped but generous mound of thinly sliced corvine was presented to us dressed in aromatic tiger milk and topped with fresh red onion, big yellow corn kernels and colourful flowers, an artful creation that looked as beautiful as it tasted. Fresh, zesty and of contrasting textures, we guessed the price to be around three times higher than the 18 Euro it actually cost, an incredible value for money as even between four of us, we got several slices of the tender fish each.

Meanwhile, the on-trend Ocean Poke Bowl was bursting with superfoods such as spinach, juicy mango chunks, Hijiki seaweed, Wakame Weed, avocado cream and quinoa on a hearty sushi rice base and topped with a protein of your choice: salmon, tuna, prawn or Ikura roe. We opted for soft, red and tender raw tuna chunks, which tasted absolutely divine dressed with a citrusy ponzu sauce and sesame seeds.  Never ones to be able to resist sushi, we also tried the incredible Nikkei Roll, which held a tasty tempura prawn and creamy avocado in its rice confines and was topped with delicate raw tuna and an irresistible citrus mayonnaise, a feast of colours, textures and flavours. ‘This is the best sushi I have had in my life,” one of our happy fellow foodies exclaimed!

With a fresh jug of Elderflower And White Wine Sangria on the table, in between courses we strolled over to the famous statement pool where a vocal act of trendy starlets had taken over the stage and regaled revellers with a live performance. Only the arrival of a juicy chicken fillet could lure us back to the table, which, with its golden skin and moist centre, and a side bowl of healthy brown rice bursting with mushrooms and veggies, made us decide that ‘chicken will never taste the same again’ after we had polished off this divine creation.

With the Ocean Beach Ibiza team keeping to tempt us with the offer of cocktails and cake, we finished our feast with a tasting selection of the beach club’s fine desserts. And our eyes almost popped out of our heads when it arrived, a three-tiered cake stand laden with sweets, fresh fruit and floral decorations, something that could have come straight out of our wildest Willy Wonka dreams! One huge doorstopper slice of American cheesecake, a delightfully squidgy Chocodream brownie served with coconut icecream and caramelised nuts, and a Lime Tart with a carefully ‘crème brulee style’ burnt top and raspberry mousse side later, on half of our crew was ready to admit defeat and sleep off the impending food coma on one of the spacious daybeds. The other half, in high spirits, ordered two different versions of the Espresso Rocks for a boost: one made with vodka, and the other mixed with Patron tequila according to their preferences. Caffeine kick ingested, they shimmied off to splash about in the pool and get into the party vibe alongside the rest of Ocean Beach Ibiza’s many happy visitors…
