Nestled into the striking hills of Cala Jondal, Es Savina may share the same coastline as some of the
bigger names in dining and entertainment, but this eatery isn’t one to be overlooked. By contrast, a
laid-back and authentic space with a ‘hidden gem’ vibe, this is the place for dining on fresh seafood and meats that are cooked to perfection, for a reasonable price, in the most enchanting setting underneath a sprinkle of juniper trees.

A family-run restaurant with traditional Ibicenco recipes mastered over 27 years, the service is charming and effortless with an atmosphere to match. Our afternoon spent at Es Savina felt like a blip in time, away from the hustle and bustle, in an oasis of tranquillity. Driving through the winding roads to get to the restaurant was a treat in itself, it was a beautiful day and the views from the atop the mountain were breath-taking as we made our descend. Arriving at the location felt like unchartered territory, the vivid yellow and green colours of the buildings that greeted us reminiscent of a
throwback to vintage Cuba.

The ocean before us was glistening in the afternoon sun; the restaurant a scene out of a postcard. Beautiful oak tables lined the gravelled floor beneath the wispy juniper trees; bright pink and yellow flowers sprouting in between. The atmosphere was incredibly peaceful and the beach felt as if it was all ours. Ibiza’s lively beach club scene felt like a million miles away in this peaceful set-up.

Taking our seats to the sounds of gentle salsa music and with the pebbled shore before us, to start we chose a goat cheese salad and clams in a roasted red pepper and tomato puree. The clams were juicy and
the accompanying sauce incredibly smooth in flavour. The goats cheese in the salad was one of the
best we’ve tasted; light, fluffy and delicately creamy, it was delicious along with the crunch of pine nuts and a sweet burst of raisins and pineapple.

Having heard many a good word about the paella here, it wasn’t long until one was swiftly presented at the table. Making the most of their locally sourced fish, we chose a seafood platter to accompany – a real showpiece. Prawns of several types, squid, octopus and dorada steaks laid out beautifully and
cooked equally so, it was a dish fit for beach royalty – a true delight to savour with the views around
us. The paella was incredibly flavoursome too and with a crisp glass of Rose we polished off more
than we could manage.

Completely satisfied and – sadly – with hardly any room to sample their sweet offerings, we moved over
to a table out of the shade of the trees and pulled up a chair at the traditional onsite chiringuito. Serving a range of delectable smoothies and cocktails from the bar all day long, we chose to end on a selection of their recommended cocktails; our favourite, the mango daquiri blended with wonderfully ripe and fresh fruit. With sunloungers, massages and a boutique on offer, too, there is every reason to extend your visit and bask in the serenity of this beachside retreat. Es Savina is truly a refreshing hideaway amongst the glitz of Ibiza’s hotspots – with a fantastic menu, delightful staff and laid-back vibe this is one gem for a taste of authentic island life.
