30 years exactly after beginning to host his own club nights in Paris in 1988, David Guetta showed us once more how to fill a party space as the closing night of his BIG Residency at Ushuaïa Ibiza drew capacity crowds. Such is his global superstar status, that minutes before the house music icon took to the festival size stage, it seemed as if the whole venue froze to a halt, with the thousands of revellers straining to get a first look at the French producer and take those all important social media snaps. But let’s rewind a little…

Ending his seventh season at the equally famous Playa d’en Bossa outdoor club, this summer the hot-in-demand hitmaker spend an extended run of four month taking over Ushuaïa Ibiza with his high-profile pals, with special guests who dropped by including Jax Jones, Klingande, Robin Schulz, Chainsmokers, Alesso, Oliver Heldens, and many more illustrious names. Billed for the closing night were BIG regulars LOVRA, Hugel and Jonas Blue before the main man himself would take to the decks.

Making our way past the giant cut-out letters spelling out BIG in front of the entrance – a first selfie opportunity – we could already hear the roaring crowd inside the party arena, energetic beats and the C02 jets firing off clouds of white mist into the evening air. With Jonas Blue commanding the turntables against a backdrop of exotic palm leafs and colourful geometric patterns, the party was in full swing with revellers throwing their hands in the air and waving oversized foam hands in joyful abandon. Serving up pure, tropical feel-good vibes, the London-based DJ and producer topped one anthem after the next, ranging from the haunting notes of Alesso and Dirty South’s Sweet Disposition remix to the fun and fierce Fandango by Le Cheval and, of course, a generous helping of his own hits. Perfect Strangers, Mama and his unavoidable summer hit Fast Car feat. Dakota send the throbbing floor positively wild.

And this is when we are back at the point of David Guetta’s arrival. Scheduled for a generous two-hour set, which even attracted his fellow Ibiza resident Black Coffee to swing by the raring party, the air was fizzing with anticipation as his loyal fans awaited his arrival at 22.00. With the manner of a true superstar, keen music lovers were lining the back of the stage to watch the Titanium hitmaker as he was escorted to the booth, and the sea of people who was filling up the vast party space exploded when he greeted the party with the promise ‘we are going to make it very special – are you ready?’

With Ushuaïa Ibiza’s inimitable production firing off, Guetta launched straight into a musical love fest that expertly mixed his huge chart successes with some offbeat surprises in a nod to his early DJ days in the French urban scene. As always, that global superstar made every effort to engage with his fans and keep the energy sky high until the end. When – in true BIG style – a beautiful acrobat came floating across the sky suspended by hundreds of white balloons, it was a true pinch-me moment like you can only experience on the White Isle. And that, ladies and gentleman, is how you do it. Au revoir, Monsieur Guetta!
