Cristian Varela Takes Ibiza To The Max

Posted on June 13, 2015

Words: Lena Kochetkova.

This year is a very special one for Cristian Varela: his Pornographic Recordings label is celebrating its 15th anniversary. To mark the date, four digital EPs and a limited edition vinyl box set saw the light, treating the listeners with previously unreleased music by producers who helped to define the trademark sound of Pornographic through all these years: Ken Ishii, Gary Beck, Uto Karem, Stefano Noferini, Jon Rundell, Filterheadz, Chus & Ceballos and many others. The latest of the four EPs was released on May 18, featuring previously unreleased tracks by Carl Cox, Marco Bailey and Cristian Varela himself, and the vinyl box set was available from June 1. Moreover, in September, Cristian is planning to deliver his own new artist album that will be a real delight as well. Right now the artist is geared up for an intense Ibiza schedule: he will be playing on July 23 and August 13 at the new La Belle restaurant, on July 28 for the Float Your Boat party and for Carl Cox that night at Space, on July 30 on the Ibiza Global Radio boat party, on September 5 for the Intec showcase at Blue Marlin Ibiza and on September 6 for Reverse at Sankeys Ibiza. We had a chance to talk with one of the most renowned Spanish DJs and producers about his forthcoming gigs on the island, the glorious story of Pornographic Recordings and his attitude towards the most urgent problems of the electronic music industry…

During the 15 years that you have been managing the label, what has changed more considerably: the music market, the technology or your own creative vision?
Everything has changed, but I think my own creative vision is now more mature and specialized.

Celebrating 15 years of Pornographic, unreleased tracks by Carl Cox, Marco Bailey and Gary Beck will finally see the light. What’s the story behind these tracks, why weren’t they released earlier?
Marco Bailey was co-founder and producer in the label from the beginning. Carl and Gary love Pornographic Recordings from the first years and have always supported the label. This 15th Anniversary is a very special compilation and the perfect excuse to have their musical soul on board.

During all these years you have definitely helped many younger artists. Can you remember which talented DJs and producers you discovered and helped them gain the attention they deserve?
Pornographic discovered big talents like Bando, Tom Hades, Redhead, Steve Mulder, Joseph Capriati, Alberto Santana, David Moleon, Allen Milivojevic, Peppelino, Axel Karakasis, Gabriel D’Or & Bordoy and many others.

What is the concept of your forthcoming artist album?
The fusion of vanguard and new experimental sounds with old school and vintage soul. I love the combination of new digital synthesizers and the pure sound of analogue machines. This is Max & Max, the name of the album!

How were the gigs that you had in Ibiza 2015 so far?
Always emotive and magical. Ibiza is unique.

You used to run your weekly party in Eden, then in Vista Club, then in Blue Marlin Ibiza. This season you will appear on the island slightly more rarely, but still often enough to leave a big impact on the clubbing landscape of Ibiza 2015. Did you choose to avoid a weekly residency on the island this season to be able to enjoy a bigger artistic freedom?
Exactly! Now I want to concentrate all my energy in my studio, my music and my gigs. To be the promoter sometimes is not compatible with your time for musical creativity.

This summer you have very diverse bookings in Ibiza: clubs, boat parties, open air venues, restaurants… Is it your own policy to keep things as diverse as possible?
It is a very important decision made together with my manager Alex Montoya, who is helping me enormously to be concentrated in my musical versatility.

In September you will play for Reverse in Sankeys. To your mind, what is the biggest gain this established Spanish brand gets from collaborating with the most British club on the island?
Reverse is one of the events managed by Mg Group. All the experience from many years ago plus all the fantastic artists and big names involved in this project will make the perfect fusion with one of the most underground clubs in the island and also in the world. Something special will be born there for sure!

We are talking with you relatively fresh from the IMS now. What are the problems of music and clubbing industry that affect you personally the most? And what are your ideas on dealing with them?
The intrusion of unreal DJs and marketing products caused a huge pain in our industry. But fortunately, the audience is very clever and is increasingly supporting the real artists, who work very hard on the stages making real music in live mode. The best antidote is our support to new talent who study very seriously: their careers as producers and DJs form an important part of the music scene quality.
