Words: Iain Thomson

At the beginning of the week, we woke up to the terrible news of the passing of Paul Strange, one of dance music’s true gentlemen, and a dear friend. The charismatic lover of dance music spent two decades sharing his passion for the party with clubbers from all over the world, delivering some of the finest gatherings in his adopted Sydney home, featuring the very best international and local talent. The outpouring of shock and grief has been universal and just goes to reinforce what we all already knew, Paul Strange was one of the good guys.

Originally from Cupar in Fife, Paul was tremendously proud of his roots but chose to make his impact on the club world in New South Wales, where his adopted home saw him living his dream overlooking Bondi Beach. A ball of energy, a positive voice and a character that lit up a room without ever seeking the limelight, his loss has come as a terrible shock to all those on which he made a lasting impression. First and foremost, Paul was a clubber; he loved the dancefloor, his connection with Ibiza was pure and lasting and, he recently celebrated a milestone birthday on the island. He made everyone he met feel instantly at ease, he forged numerous long-lasting friendships from the dancefloor and he had a driving determination to give people the opportunity to find the same joy in the clubbing experience that he did.

Owner of Paul Strange Presents and Stand Out Media, Paul was one of many positive voices during a tough time for Sydney, when the much-maligned Lock Out laws threatened to destroy the previously vibrant scene. Together with a handful of other promoters, Paul was instrumental in offering clubbers in the city some unbelievable party gatherings, inviting the cream of the global club scene to the city. For almost two decades, he delivered parties with Carl Cox, Amnesia, Patrick Topping, festivals such as Days Like These, a collaboration with Division Agency and, of course, the legendary New Year’s Day Space extravaganza and that tradition of starting the year on the dancefloor!

The team at Paul Strange Presents and Paul’s family have agreed that the Space Ibiza show on New Year’s Day, named NYD 2020 – A New Era, should go ahead as a tribute to Paul. Patrice Baumel, Heidi, Rebüke, Nopir and Mateo Vitale will carry the responsibility of delivering the final dance as The Greenwood gets set for an emotional celebration of a very special individual we will never forget. Raising awareness for the ongoing fight for mental health, all profit will be donated to Paul’s daughter and Mental Health Australia. The party will run from midday until late and is a chance for every clubber, artist and friend in and around the region to join is saying goodbye to a legend, gone far too soon. For those that can’t make it on the day, but would like to make a donation, click on the ticket link and scroll to the bottom. RIP Paul, thank you for the memories.
