It’s ten years since Blue Marlin Ibiza opened its doors on Cala Jondal and changed the way we think about our day at the beach. The popular beach concept has continued to evolve throughout the decade, offering an unparalleled experience day and night. Ibiza 2014 saw Blue Marlin Ibiza celebrate its anniversary with a series of weekly events that successfully combined cutting edge, underground musical talent, with the high-end clientele and service that it is famous for, continuing to lead from the front, inspiring other beach concepts around the world. Details of the seasonal closing on Sunday October 5 have just been announced and it’s a party that sums up this new ethos perfectly with Andrea Oliva, Cirillo, Matthias Tanzmann, Technasia and UNER all featuring. It’s a mouth watering prospect to look forward to but this afternoon we have dropped in to check out the restaurant.

The drive to Cala Jondal reminds me of going to the beach with my parents as a kid, the constant question of whether we can see the sea yet on the journey and that moment when you first set eyes on it. Turning the corner at the top of the hill leading down to Cala Jondal is the first time you get a glimpse of the water, the sun reflecting off it, boats of various sizes bobbing up and down, it’s like a postcard. The Blue Marlin Ibiza Restaurant is a bit of an unsung hero for the beach concept, the outdoor party and the stunning luxury beds tend to hog all of the headlines, leaving the garden restaurant a little in the shade. The elevated dining area, on the right as you enter the venue, before you step down towards the beach beds, offers a breathtaking view across the venue and out over the crystal clear sea, the peninsula breaking up the view and adding a touch of green to the otherwise all blue view. The staff is always friendly and attentive, making sure you time with them is an enjoyable one. Manuel is looking after us today and, after showing us to our table, bringing us some drinks and rhyming off today’s specials, he leaves us for five minutes to contemplate the menu.

It’s still early afternoon so we are one of only a few diners at the moment, this will change dramatically in the hours that follow, the restaurant may not get a lot of headlines but it is never short of people looking to dine there. The music is laid back, with a soul funk feel as we order our starters – spicy salmon and avocado maki rolls for me (six pieces), burrata with sundried tomato, zucchini flower, bresaola and fresh basil for Charlie and tiger prawns in tempura with sweet chili sauce and a red curry mayonnaise for Nic. The atmosphere throughout Blue Marlin Ibiza is laid back and friendly, from the minute you walk past the branded Chrysler Jeeps at the entrance, past the four door Aston Martin (note to sell, must work harder) and into the reception, where a smiling face welcomes you before passing you on to another smiling member of staff that escorts you to your bed or table, depending on the reason for your visit. The venue itself is stunning; brilliant white furnishings stretch out in front of you as you pass from reception into the garden, ready to get involved. At this time of the day the emphasis is on relaxing and soaking up the sun, but the party will go off later into the night.

Our starters arrive and I always enjoy checking out the presentation, I think most good chefs have a hidden artistic side to them that always comes out when they are sending the dishes from the kitchen. They almost look too good to destroy by eating but at this point we are hungry, the after effects of too many bottles of wine the night before. Sushi is my favourite food and I have eaten it all over the island, there are a few amazing spots that always get it just right and this is right up there with the best of them. The maki rolls are perfect, easy to handle with the chopstics, not falling apart when dipped in the soy sauce, the fresh salmon is delicious and the kick off the spicy mayonnaise did its best to compete with the wasabi. Just the way we like it. The fact that there is silence at our table for the first time that afternoon is a pretty good indication of the quality of the other dishes, as they are swiftly demolished. We asked Manuel earlier when ordering our mains – sea bass fillet with ‘Kenya’ beans, capers, black olives and crispy shallots, grilled chicken breast with quinoa, tomato and watercress salad and the beef tenderloin with smoked puree and cranberries mustard – if we could leave 20 minutes or so between courses just to give is time to soak up the experience and that is exactly what we get.

While we relax before the mains, two models casually weave their way between the dinner tables, which, by now, are all taken, showcasing some of the fine beach garments that can be purchased at the boutique. It’s something Blue Marlin Ibiza started a long way back, catching a few people by surprise the first time round, but is now something that is a must for all beach clubs with a boutique. Your visit to Cala Jondal can tick so many boxes, from relaxing in the sun topping up on vitamin D to a full on attack on your bank account in the boutique and a chance to party with some of the best DJ talent on the planet when the sun goes down. Manuel checks we are good to go before bringing out the main courses, yet again top marks for presentation and the sea bass tasted as good as it looked. Cooked to perfection, with green beans and capers, it offers a light but filling option for lunch. Moving round the table, Nic opted for the superfood option of the quinoa and the grilled chicken, which he gives the thumbs up and as Charlie cuts into his beef tenderloin, it is cooked exactly the way he asked and apparently melts in the mouth – there was no chance of sneaking a bit to taste for ourselves!

The wine has gone from crisp rose to get us back in the game to a full red and is flowing very smoothly. The dessert menu is casually handed to us, with a confidence that says, you may be full but wait until you see what we have in store to finish you off. When the desserts arrive – Ibizan lemon pie with raspberry sorbet, Baileys parfait with chocolate fudge cake and mint marshmallow and creamy white chocolate with mango and pistachio sponge cake – it’s fair to say our eyes lit up. Once again, the chef has outdone him or herself but this time round there is no hesitation before destroying the work of art, the drops on the side of the plate that are the deep yellow colour of an egg yolk offer a mango kick and, added to the lemon meringue cake and a drizzle of raspberry sorbet, delivers the perfect taste combination. If I’m being honest, Nic’s choice probably pipped the others on the looks department, thanks to the marshmallow coating the log shaped fudge cake but the taste explosion I am experiencing with the lemon pie soon regains my attention. It is the perfect end to an afternoon at the beach (a far cry from trying to make sure no sand got in your sandwiches!)

Before we leave we catch up with Mattia Ulivieri, one of the driving forces behind the concept, who is in for anther busy winter, planning for the further evolution of the Ibiza operation in 2015, the opening of Blue Marlin Ibiza in Miami opening in 2015. We say our goodbyes and return to reality, but not before one last peak inside the four door Aston Martin on the way back to our car. The surprising fact is that you don’t have to own one of these amazing vehicles to eat in Blue Marlin Ibiza, of course it’s not a budget eatery but you can easily fit a meal into your holiday budget and it is one you will remember long after your golden sun tan has faded.
