Ushuaïa’s Ants opened the 2015 season with a spectacular production on Saturday, drawing a fresh new colony of followers. The show went above and beyond with elaborate set design, throbbing techno beats, all-engulfing lighting, special effects and dedicated performers. The Ants Opening Party was certainly among the most anticipated events on the magical island last week and preparations to kick off the season could be seen both through the extensive and innovative marketing and PR campaigns and the party-goers’ own efforts to get in the mood. Long before the gates opened in the middle of the afternoon, the lines of people dressed in black and stamped with ants tattoos stretched long throughout Playa d’en Bossa.

As soon as you enter you realise it’s not just the crowd that is setting the mood. The black ants that regularly make up the facade of the Ushuaïa hotel on both sides of the open-air club are complemented by big black nets stretching over the smaller pool, around the palm trees on the side and up on to the stage. These cloth nets, marking where the colony lives, forms cages on both sides of the stage and a huge tent enclosing the entire DJ booth. With a star-studded line-up that includes Andrea Oliva, Deetron, Los Suruba, Luna City Express, Matthias Tanzmann, Tapesh and Uner, the music was always going to be the stare of this show. Ants has built a strong following in the relatively short lifespan of the party, showcasing talented residents alongside special guests but with an eye firmly on the quality of music delivered at all times. The deep house to tech house to techno flow has proved to be hugely successful and, with another wave of ants joining the colony to celebrate the launch of the 2015 season, it looks certain to continue.

Ants’ stimulation of the senses doesn’t end with the amazing DJ sets you can hear, however, early on it shows off a stage lined with huge smoke machines and a backdrop of an extra large LED screen projecting grey fabrics in motion. In addition, the four corners of the club are crowned with 3-floor-high towers made of LED screens themselves, where black ants crawl up and down. And the spectacle has barely started. Right after sunset, a landing plane, flying just above our heads is greeted by bright red fireworks and an explosion of white confetti. Now that it’s getting darker, the lighting techicians are stepping their game up. Shooting blue, green and red laser pointers all the way across the big pool, across the comfy VIP lounges on the left and to the large terrace at the back, so even the lucky hotel guests enjoying the party from their room balconies are thoroughly engaged. The LED towers become watchtowers overseeing, with bright blue searchlights, a colony hard at work. Giant black ants start crawling up oil barrels behind the DJs who ensure you feel part of one giant family with one purpose – to dance.

The slower musical moments and occasional vocals come hand in hand with continuous laser walls changing shapes through the smoke. New set of confetti explosions and fireworks rain on the overwhelmed crowed with flame-throwers burning the heavens with yellow and bright red flames on both sides of the stage. The heat of day should be gone in the breezy night, but you can’t feel any coolness in the midst of the ever-moving party animals (insects, to be exact) front of the stage. But just at the track drops, the soothing ice cannon shoots all its got! And it still doesn’t end here. Hanging acrobats dressed in black leather, huge stilettos and gas masks are suspended above the stage on four black cloths, one for each limb. Twice through the show, they dance as if they are caught by the colony and are being carried away against their will. Halfway through the night, four dancers come up caged in the nets on stage. The crowd reacts instinctively, sending out screams and firing their fists in the air. A third type of confetti and new sparkling fireworks mark the climax in the evening. An epic wind down in sound together with dozens of bright white flashes on stage signal the show has reached its close. The ecstatic begs for an encore are replied with carefully placed calls to ‘carry on at Reverse’ in Sankeys and the gates open. As the night goes, the new colony spreads, crawling all over Ibiza more ready for the 2015 season.
