An Evening At El Olivo Mio

I was more than thrilled this week to be invited to dine within the majestic walls of the historic old town of ‘Dalt Vila’, with its breath-taking views overlooking the bustling town and the glittering harbour below. El Olivo Mio, a stylish Italian eatery, was my chosen spot for the evening. Walking over the drawbridge at an energetic ‘tango’ pace (due to my insistence on timekeeping), myself and a few friends arrived at the beautiful restaurant slightly out of breath, joyful and excited for the evening ahead.

The first thing you will notice as you approach El Olivio Mio is how vibrantly it stands out from the backdrop of the whitewashed gothic buildings behind. Each table within the outdoor eating space is lovingly decorated with bright red, rose embroidered tablecloths, scattered glass candle holders, and small metal pots filled with delicate fresh flowers. Meanwhile, the inside is delightful and just as cute – think retro Spanish kitsch with an authentic twist!

El Olivo Mio is the proud creation of owner Rita Sachs, a well-known name in Ibiza’s gastronomy scene. Rita previously owned (in partnership) popular restaurant Sa Punta in the sought-after area of Talamanca for 13 years. With this success in mind, during 2016 she was inspired to embark on this solo project, bringing together a team of glamorous female staff and creating a feminine and flamboyant establishment.

Our evening started (as standard) with a few delicious cocktails. Our delightful waitress for the evening, Oriyana, delivered a delicious basket of homemade bread, delicately scented olives and an appetizer of al dente puy lentils, tossed with grated carrot and torn basil leaves, delicious! Immersing ourselves in the entertainment of the street performers in front, we were by now embracing our inner gypsy. As wonderful as the performers were, once our starters arrived we politely averted our eyes back to the table.

A must to mention here is the ‘Canelón Casero’ made with homemade pasta and stuffed with pulled beef cheeks in a creamy bechamel sauce… would it be greedy to order another?! The ‘Huevo a Baja Temperature’ held its own story. The egg is cooked in water for a surprisingly long 35 minutes at 73 degrees, which results in a delicious soft egg yolk resting on a bed of mashed potatoes with mushrooms and demi-glace sauce. Last, but not least, the ‘Pulpo Caramelizado’ was another taste sensation, with all three dishes being a new addition to this season’s menu.

After such wonderful starters, we were super keen to sample the delights of the main courses.
We were unsurprisingly not to be disappointed. Our first choice was the ‘Lubina Chilena’, a delicately cooked wild sea bass in miso served with a zesty basmati rice. Next, we welcomed a mixture of alluring dishes. The ‘Pierna de Cordero’ was an absolute winner, a five-hour slow cooked leg of lamb with mashed potatoes and blanched vegetables. The homemade duck ravioli, with thyme and a subtle twist of candied orange, was perfectly executed. My personal favorite to mention was the ‘Tagliatelle Caseros’ with fresh lobster, served without the shell so that you enjoy the delicious pink meat without the usual kerfuffle.

The service we received from Rita and her staff was perfectly slick, this is an establishment that you can feel has been created with love and therefore establishing a warm and sumptuous dining experience. With just enough room for dessert, we sampled a selection of delicious homemade treats; a warm chocolate coulant, a fragrant blackberry pie made with an authentic homemade pastry, and an exceptional chocolate and meringue cake. I can confidently assure you that the ‘Brioche French Toast’ was not ignored, either – there was not a chance I was leaving any on my plate! With full tummies and happy hearts, we ended the night spent in Rita’s fabulous hospitality with big smiles on our faces.
