After weeks – if not months – of curious anticipation, Wednesday, July 20th, saw the launch of an exciting new clubbing concept on the White Isle that has had residents and industry insiders talking since word of its conception had started to spread. Alter, an ‘over 25s only’ boutique club that is shaking up some of the more divise night club norms of Ibiza – like VIP seating and overpriced drinks – welcomed locals and visitors to the island alike for a first look and party at the newly refurbished venue in San Antonio Bay.

Taking over what used to be the home of the well-known Summum club in Cala Bou, which first opened in 1979 in a building designed by Luis Güell, the venue enjoyed an extensive face lift before its inaugural party, mixing a minimalist white colour theme with decadent marble flooring and wall panels and a tongue-in-cheek nod to the opulence of ancient Greece. Split columns and ceramic female statues give an air of historical luxury – until you spot a giant fried egg sculpture on the ceiling! In another corner, a goddess like figurine is straddling a hot dog, the equivalent of a cheeky wink from the interior designer. White leather seating areas, sectioned by white wooden room dividers made from branches, create lounge areas for socializing or resting your feet after a dance marathon.

While the venue has an intimate feel, dancing space is generous and there are three bars to avoid long waiting times. The cocktail menu features popular classics like Espresso Martini, Whiskey Sour, Mojito and Daiquiri, but our eye was caught by the offer of customisable gin mixers. After selecting their spirit brand of choice, guests can add berries, cucumber, peppercorn or mint amongst others to create their perfect blend. And, looking after their customers, we were impressed to find that for the opening night a glass jar of free cigarettes (yes, really) had been placed in the outdoor smoking area, as well as free condoms and feminine care in the ladies bathroom. Now that’s what we call generous hospitality!

Alter OpeningHaving secured partnerships with recognised music promoters and brands, Alter’s 7-nights-a-week clubbing marathon boasts some impressive names on their line-ups, and for the opening night many of the island’s favourite DJs took to the decks. We arrived just in time to catch Melon Bomb founder Scott Gray in the booth, who was bringing his signature funky house mix and infectious beats to Alter, much to the delight of the revelers who were enthusiastically throwing shapes. Live saxophonist Ivan M and percussionist Rocky added a traditional Balearic element to the set as they improvised their sounds to the DJ’s set.

At 2.15pm, the eclectic crowd of island residents and industry movers and shakers that had turned out in force – and style – for the opening, were far from ready to go home and Essential Ibiza’s very own Jo Mills took over the booth ready to take the party vibe up a notch. Playing a selection of driving underground tech-house tunes, the former DC10 and Pacha resident was received with much love and enthusiasm by partygoers, who were blowing kisses at her from the dance floor. Watching Jo energetically dance along, we couldn’t resist a boogie ourselves with the crystal clear sonic perfection of the Void sound system in our ears.

Another Ibiza stalwart, DJ Callum ended the night on a tribal tip with his blend of house tunes, with several hardcore partygoers refusing to vacate the dance floor up until the last minute. Offering a more intimate and unpretentious setting for your night out, if you like your parties with an inclusive, sociable feel and a crowd that is quirky, interesting and cool, all brought together by the lure of an insider’s dream line-up, then… welcome home! And with seven different concepts to choose from including Retro on Monday night, I-Culture on Tuesday, Antz Play It By Ear on Wednesday, Engage Ibiza on Thursday, Edit Fridays, Boutique Balearic on Saturday and Car Wash finishing on Sunday, you are spoilt for choice.

This Saturday, we highly recommend you check out Boutique Balearic,  a night starring some of the biggest island DJs of the last decade including Pete Gooding, Jo Mills, Andy Baxter and Dave Phillips, all of whom have played integral parts in Ibiza’s clubbing history. On Sunday, you can wave goodbye to Monday anxiety thanks to Car Wash, a club brand with over two decades of history that has hosted thousands of parties worldwide. Original founder Nigel Atkin and partner in crime Steve Altman will be at the helm, joined by Rocky Percussion, Garbo on Sax and a series of special guests. With advance tickets priced just 15 Euros and 20 Euros on the door, there really is no excuse!
