You could say that on Ibiza, every night is a special night, but some occasions just require that extra touch of magic. And when we really want to impress or dining partners – or simply spoil ourselves – we head to La Imprenta Grand Café & Restaurante in Ibiza Town. Part of the renowned Amar Ibiza Group, the stylish restaurant and cocktail bar is show-stopping in every aspect, starting with the opulent décor, continuing with the luxurious cuisine creations and rounding off the experience with riveting entertainment. Ahead of the whirlwind of opening parties, we figured we deserved a treat and went for a sumptuous dinner.

From the moment you set foot onto the striking marble floor and step behind the heavy velvet curtain, you feel like you have entered another era – or the movie set of The Great Gatsby, perhaps. Lovingly decorated with much attention to detail and imagination, the scene for a special meal is set thanks to the intimate feel of each dining area, the rich statement wallpaper, plush velvet seats, black leather tablemats and polished silver cutlery. The team is attentive and welcoming without being overbearing, and each member of staff is educated to perfection about the items on the venue’s extensive menu.

Having previously been dazzled by La Imprenta’s break-out entertainment concept Chicago, a night featuring cabaret-style performances inspired by the prohibition area and jazz age that is now showing every evening, we excitedly toasted the occasion with a couple of cocktails prepared in the dazzling and well stocked bar. A huge glass fridge laden with a selection of the finest wines had also caught our eye while ascending the glamorous art deco staircase, however, we couldn’t resist La Imprenta’s artisanal mixology concoctions.

Dressed up as vintage vixens with sparkling headpieces, the beautiful ladies behind the counter expertly created a refreshing and zesty Champagne Fizz for us, a luxurious version of the classic G&T made with Beefeater gin, a homemade tonic reduction and grapefruit bitters topped up with a sparkly brut. We also sipped on La Imprenta’s potent but well-balanced version of the classic Margarita, combining essence of kafir leaf, lime juice, silver tequila, aloe vera and agave syrup.

You know a restaurant is something very special when the classic bread basket is something to get excited about, and in La Imprenta’s case, is most certainly is. The chunky and delightfully squidgy slices are served with two varieties of butter to please every palette on the table; a luxurious and elegant truffle version and a hearty and savoury yeast-infused type. While we were still marvelling at the divine combination, an amuse bouche of silky watermelon cream with a lemon foam arrived, a fruity explosion of carefully prepared textures brought out in a chupito glass.

Meanwhile, the classic sounds of a playful 1920s’ swing intro announced the first performance, a sultry rendition of the iconic Big Spender performed by a striking female vocalist and her troupe of sassy dancers. The only thing that could tear our eyes away momentarily was the arrival of our starters, an indulgent plate of silky foie served in an aromatic warm duck gravy, which, with a haute cuisine presentation, was every bit as luxurious and delicious as it sounds. Never able to resist a homemade pasta, we also swooned over a plate of perfectly al dente tortellini served in a clear broth and filled with a smorgasboard of different flavour combinations such as tomato and beetroot, spinach and basil, onion and orange, and carrot, sweet potato and ginger.

We usually try to order a selection of different main courses, however, on this occasion we simply couldn’t resist the leg of lamb and went for the same dish. Oh boy, where to even start. As someone who spent many years avoiding mutton in any shape or form because I found its aroma too strong for my taste, I was totally and utterly blown away by the perfection on my plate. The meat was so soft it literally melted off the bone, the flavour was delicate and balanced and the skin had just the right amount of crackle. Served on a bed of silky potato mash and crunchy asparagus, it is hands down the best lamb I have ever tasted.

After so much mouth-watering goodness, we really didn’t have much room left for dessert but, with the performances gathering in pace with energetic dance routines and a sexy burlesque number, we decided to stay for a final naughty treat. Choosing to share La Imprenta’s cuisine version of the classic Banoffee Pie, we swooned over the combination of creamy banana and caramel wedged between two layers of crunchy pastry that reminded us of the famous Spanish ‘churro’ treat in texture, like a heavenly sandwich.

To help it slip down, we ordered another cocktail – oops – a classic Pornstar Martini made with vodka, passion fruit, lime, vanilla syrup and cava, which has been a runaway success on the Amar Group’s menus since they opened their first restaurant in Dalt Vila, La Dispensa. With the dazzling Chicago shows drawing to a close, it was just the fuel we needed to join the invitation of the beautiful dancers to join them on the dancefloor and dance off some of the calories. A journey for all senses, we eventually left La Imprenta on a high, already plotting who we can surprise with a visit to this glamorous and riveting venue…
