With its colourful stalls, infectious live music, hearty food and refreshing drinks, a day spent strolling through the sprawling grounds of Punta Arabi’s famous Hippy Market, located in the tranquil north of the island, makes for a fabulous day out whether you’re in a big group of friends, enjoying quality time with the family or planning a date with a difference. And with this White Isle institution celebrating its 45th anniversary this summer, there has never been a better time to visit.

Dating back all the way to 1973, when the management of the Punta Arabi resort offered the local hippy community to sell their handmade crafts and products sourced from all over the globe to the relatively small amount of holidaymakers in the hotel complex back then, most Ibiza veterans have their own fond memories of their first visit. While there is still a big focus on the White Isle’s high-octane nightlife, a day at the Punta Arabi offers an antidote to the madness of high season Ibiza and a slice of authenticity. Of course, during the summer it gets very busy indeed, but thanks to the relaxed vibe you will feel as though you have stepped into an alternate universe.

While Ibiza may have undergone huge changes since it first came to global attention as a holiday hotspot, the Punta Arabi Hippy market has managed to retain its authenticity and charming feel, with some of the original founding members still a part of the market community. The selection of stalls, however, has dramatically increased, growing from a modest five merchants in the ‘70s to over 500 salesmen and women. Add to that the tented performance space, where you can also snap up a mean paella and cold beers, a children’s area, a mojito bar and many other nooks and crannies to explore, and it’s no surprise that a map has been created to help you circumnavigate the bustling maze.

From tie-dye hippy outfits to crochet dresses, vintage shirts to crystal jewellery and real leather bags, fashionistas will be in seventh heaven when they work their way though the stalls, with eclectic and unique pieces waiting to be snapped up in every corner. But there are also many beautiful treats for your home, as well as cute souvenirs to remind you of your time on the White Isle. Have feathery hair accessories braided into your locks, stock up your holiday bar with authentic Hierbas Ibicencas or swoon over the tiny white cotton outfits for little ones.

When hunger strikes, choose from authentic Spanish fare such as seafood paella or tortillas and wash it down with a cold beer or tasty cocktail while listening to the live music acts performing every week between 14.00 and 16.00 in the tent, with music styles ranging from Flamenco to Afro-Reggae, Funk and Soul. Punta Arabi Hippy Market also regularly hosts art and photography exhibitions, completing its cultural offering to combine all the elements that make Ibiza so special. Taking place every Wednesday from 10.00 until 18.00, it is well worth to abandon your beach plans for a day and experience the incredible atmosphere and colourful crafts of this iconic White Isle institution.
