Las Salinas

Picture the scene. You skip across white, powdery sand into crystal-clear shallow waters that shimmer in the most gorgeous jewel shades of light and darker blues. You submerge yourself into the gentle waves and float along, with the finest of Balearic beats drifting into your ear. If this sounds like heaven to you, Las Salinas is the beach for you! One of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the island and studded with plenty of fine dining opportunities, it has also become a popular sunbathing spot for the international jet set, which pull up in their yachts before heading to lunch at one of the chic restaurants. From a relaxed hippy beach bar to elegant seaside eateries, Salinas has got it all…

Even the approach is pretty spectacular as you follow the long road past Ibiza airport’s runway and clubbing institution DC10 towards the coast, passing the famous salt flats and its illusive inhabitants, the White Isle flamingos. Flanked by the historic Torre de ses Portes (an ancient watchtower) to the left and La Nave Salinas, a former salt storage warehouse that has been converted into an art venue, to the right when facing the sea, the crescent of white powder is shrouded by fragrant pine trees. In the off-season months especially, it is a great area to explore during a nature walk or – for fitness fiends – a run. Apart from being a beautiful spot to soak up some rays and splash around in the gentle waters, there are plenty of culinary and entertainment options to choose from, whether you’re the active kind or a foodie. Sporty types will enjoy a spot of body boarding in the azure waves, while small catamarans and pedalos are available to hire at the most southern edge of the beach.

When hunger strikes, the issue will not be to find something to eat, but rather the many attractive choices. Guaraná Salinas is a bright and airy eatery that offers fresh seafood with stunning views over the crystal waters, located towards the southern edge of the beach, and, because of this, perhaps a spot calmer than the eateries in the middle of the beach. It’s next-door neighbour Malibu Beach Club dazzles with delicious Mediterranean fare as well as international classics; stop by for the tasty paella and bustling atmosphere. The Jockey Club – arguably the most famous of venues on Salinas beach – is the life and soul of the party, where leisurely lunches frequently turn into champagne-fuelled afternoon parties. At the far end of the beach – and past the nudist stretch, so those with a sensitive nature should shield their eyes – lies the formidable beach shack of Sa Trinxa, with its iconic wooden walkway into the sea (the beach has a few rocky spots here). Playing goose-bump inducing DJ sets, this is the perfect place to grab a beer or cocktail and enjoy the warm haze of magic hour.

As you get closer to the watchtower, the wide sandy expanse turns into intimate coves shielded from view by small cliffs. These are frequented by locals and holidaymakers who prefer to sunbathe au naturel, so be prepared if you are not keen on the nudist lifestyle yourself. The approximately 30-minute walk to the Torre de ses Portes is well worth the effort though, as you take in breathtaking views, hippy rock carvings and the remnants of excavation sites now flooded by the sea. When the sun starts to go down, Boutique Hostal Salinas right across the road from the beach offers not only a cool and quirky boutique accommodation to lay your head, it is also a great option for a sundowner dinner. Look out for special events, as the stylish abode is known amongst locals for its excellent parties. One of Ibiza’s hottest sunset spots, it is highly recommended to nip into Experimental Beach, which is not strictly speaking on Las Salinas but takes you down a winding track alongside the salt pans – magnificent in purple and pink when the sun comes down – until you reach the chic cocktail bar. Las Salinas has become one of the most famous beaches in Ibiza for good reason, and if you love good food, great music and a bit of people watching, make sure you put it high on your list!
