From its famous Sunday Roast to star chef takeovers by the likes of Hawkmoor’s Richard Turner, over the years legendary boutique hotel Pikes Ibiza has established itself as a bit of a foodie destination in its own right. Adding both cultural and culinary strings to its bow, the rock ‘n’ roll lair in the hills just outside of San Antonio now offers several exciting gourmet concepts over the course of the season, the latest being a takeover by UK street food truck Vietvan.

Founded by Kate Moss’ younger brother Nick, who used his extensive travel experiences in Vietnam to create a menu of mouth-watering South-East Asian delicacies, you can usually find his street food van catering to the appetites of market revellers and private clients in the UK. Putting together a varied tasting menu for a night of exotic flavours at Room 39, Pikes’ in-house restaurant, it was no surprise that from poolside to Plaza Mayor, the quirky hotel was bustling with guests.

As we made our way to the first floor of the restaurant, which overlooks the famous Club Tropicana swimming pool, the property’s sprawling gardens and the glittering lights of San Antonio in the distance, we could already smell the distinctive aromas of the three-course tasting menu wafting through the air. Culinary connoisseurs from all over the island had made a reservation for the night, including Pikes Ibiza resident DJ Harvey, a self-confessed foodie.

As we toasted our meal with a bittersweet Asian Pear Martini – made with sake, fresh pear puree, pear liqueur and lime, a perfect concoction for this autumnal night – we listened to the eclectic and infectious set spun poolside. For starters we enjoyed a sharing platter of exotically spiced Vietnamese pork balls, grilled crab cakes filled with chunks of crunchy vegetables and fresh chilli, and addictive BBQ tofu skewers that had us fighting over the last bites.

Seared tuna steak coated in sesame seeds was tender with a subtle taste of the sea, Vietnamise Pork Larb served in crunchy lettuce leaf cups exploded with flavour and the BBQ corn with garlic and chilli melt was finger-licking good! Perfectly seared rib-eye beef had us swooning over its texture and taste, while the chicken curry made for a most moreish plate we couldn’t stop ladling onto our plate even as we could feel our bellies fill up. Another standout dish of the night was the refreshing and zesty papaya salad with crushed peanuts, a combination of sweet and tropical aromas contrasted with crispy slaw and crunchy nuts.

The selection of desserts that followed was a pleasingly delicate and creative assortment – no food coma to worry about – of popcorn served in a jar and topped with salted caramel sauce, a sweet and sour lychee jelly coated with tingling sherbet and luscious passion fruit ice cream. We scooped up every last bite, savouring the last moments of our culinary journey to South-East Asia.
