Sankeys opened its Ibiza doors for the first time last season and, as expected, it made a huge impact on the white isle. One of the world’s top clubbing brands the only surprise about its move into Ibiza last summer is that it took so long. Sankeys captured the hearts and minds of underground clubbers, adding credibility and quality to the Playa D’en Bossa venue with a host of top-notch parties. Year two promises to be much more of the same as the Manchester born super brand announced plans for its two-part opening.
Part one, Carnival, takes place on Thursday May 24 and reads like a who’s who of the underground; Solomon, Tiefschwarz, Guti Live and David August gives an indication of how seriously Sankeys takes its second season, a year normally reserved for consolidation, the forward thinking brand has delivered a statement of intent that suggests a raising of the bar even further. Part two, Bugged Out! Takes place on the following evening, Friday May 25 and features heavyweights Basement Jaxx and Booka Shade, both delivering DJ sets, ably supported by, amongst others, Joy Orbison and Mosca.
Sankeys director David Vincent has a very clear idea of what Sankeys is and how it fits into the global clubbing map, although, when Essentialibiza spoke to him last summer he was pleasantly surprised at how the brand had been embraced by the cooler, more underground element in Ibiza, the clubbers that are scattered throughout the island but who are not afraid to travel for a good party. Clearly, with the announcement of the opening parties, this is something that he is happy to maintain this summer, “I was recently asked how I see our second season in Ibiza, and answered ‘we’re taking no prisoners!’ It’s there for all to see we are really upping everything about Sankeys Ibiza, and there are some brilliant names lined up for our season. Everything we’re doing is informed by the club back in Manchester – it’s the same spirit of consistently booking the best underground names and showcasing some great new talent, alongside established stars who understand what Sankeys is about. I’m so excited to be going back and unleashing what we have in store for everyone!”
The opening week sees Sankeys team up with some other well know club brands, Bugged Out! and Fuse both bring their unique flavour to the Playa D’en Bossa venue. Bugged Out!’s Johnno had this to say on the opening party part two, “Bugged Out can’t wait to host parties at the new Sankeys in Ibiza. The club night started at Sankeys back in 1994 so we it’s always been a spiritual home for us, and I imagine they’ll have more sun in Playa d’en Bossa than Ancoats! We’re working with both legendary acts and rising stars on our dates and we’re super keen to reveal our line ups.” While Enzo from Fuze is equally excited about the collaboration, “I’m very much looking forward to our Sankeys Ibiza return this year. The Fuse residents and I are working hard in the studio making music for this summer and we can’t wait to be let loose on that amazing sound system!”
Essentialibiza has witnessed some amazing parties in Ibiza, as well as some of the finest venues ion the world and Sankeys Playa D’en Bossa really made an impression on us. The Manchester based club has always placed a great deal of importance on the space, the sound, the lighting and the line up and they got it just right in year one. Year two sees them up the ante and we can’t wait for summer 2012’s shenanigans.
