Monday Madness Returns

Words: Jodie DS

Jodie DS joined the Essential crew last summer, combining her already busy Ibiza diary with some nocturnal bits on the clubbing side for us. She left before the end of the season, vowing to return and, true to form, is back on the island and making a much bigger contribution. A lover of dance music and everything that goes with it, she confessed that she had never been to DC10 for a Circo Loco party! Astonished, we put that right immediately, with the opening party of the season…

I am embarrassed to say I did a season in 2014 and I didn’t ever make it to DC10. When I told people I had never been they looked at me as if I were lying, telling me I am crazy. Well. it’s ok, because I can now say I have experienced a Circo Loco party, but not just any Circo Loco party, the OFFICIAL OPENING for 2015! With their slogan of “Expect the unexpected”, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Having not been back on the island long, partying during the week still doesn’t feel quite right. Partying on a Monday feels a little bit rebellious, like going out on a school night. However I think I might have to start making Tuesdays my new day off from now on, what an amazing party.

I am not sure what I loved more, the music, the venue, the planes flying over or the fact that everyone was there for one thing, THE MUSIC. The vibe across all three areas was incredible with everyone smiling ear to ear. I now understand why people fly from all over the world, just for this party. I was really surprised as people had told me I would need a crash helmet, but to be honest I think some of the other clubs are worse. I am sure however if I had of worn the helmet, it would have been more than acceptable dress code; everything goes at DC10. The club was at capacity and I loved it. It didn’t have the ice canons, dancers and acrobats like some of the other clubs but I think that’s what makes it so special. It has a real underground vibe.

I made my way in by taxi from Playa d’en Bossa for only seven Euros. Coming from San Antonio It would be about 30 Euros. You can also catch the bus to Salinas Beach, which is less than 1km walk away for around three Euros. I was greeted by the friendly security who had to have been the nicest on the island, maybe perhaps because they get paid to be at one of the best parties in Ibiza? First thing on my DC10 bucket list was a photo in front of the famous DC10 sign in the Garden. I got a picture just as the sun was setting. I was hoping a plane would fly over at the same time but wasn’t quite that lucky. When the planes did fly over, I couldn’t believe how low they were and how loud, for a second you couldn’t even hear the music. To the left of the sign is a huge billboard showing the history of Circo Loco and the crazy clown face symbol since 1999. DC10 itself however has been open since 1990.

It was time for a drink, I had been told prices weren’t too bad and was expecting to pay around 10 Euros for a long drink. Drinks were a little more than expected, at 15 Euros but they were very generous with the vodka to lemon ratio. Trying not to spill my drink through hundreds of people, I made my way to the dance floor to secure my dancing pad. After some dancing and a few more vodka lemons it was time for a trip to the bathroom. DC10 is no longer just a warehouse at the end of the airport run way. Every year the club is renovating to bring clubbers from all over the world the best underground experience. Once only having portaloos like a festival, DC10 now has a renovated toilet block in the Garden with big mirrors, which is essential being a lady. I also loved how fast the lines moved, again the security did a great job! Enough about the toilets, lets talk about the real reason everyone goes to DC10, the music! In every DJ interview I read when asked where their dream place to play is, they say DC10; everyone loves DC10. Looking at the DJ line up I wanted to be in the Terrace. I got a bit confused thinking the Terrace was the outside area, but that’s called the Garden. I eventually worked it out after going from room to room, finally I made it!

In the Terrace, which opened at 17:00 the line-up included Mass Prod, SOSSA, DJ QU, Tiger and Woods, D’julz, Black Coffee vs Kerri Chandler, Tale Of Us and Cassy Britton. Having experienced all three rooms, I have to say, I loved the Garden the most, the line up included Andrew Grant, Clive Henry, System Of Survival, Tania Vulcano and Apollonia but I couldn’t wait to see Circo Loco resident and Moon Harbour label owner Matthias Tanzmann. He played before Jamie Jones. For a solid three hours of both their sets I was glued. Not sure if resident of nearly nine years Davide Squillace got to play as Jamie Jones’ set was cut short. Everyone including Jamie put their thumbs down with disappointment. Jamie turned the music down before it cut completely; looks as though the fun police were at it again. Eager to keep on dancing everyone made their way inside following the music and the crowd.

The main room, which had opened at 16.30 and had been steadily building, was the next port of call. The DJ line up at the Circo Loco parties is always an impressive thing, the opening party seems to go that step further and every arena is packed with some of the finest underground talent – Russ Yallop, Mees Dierdorp, Richy Ahmed vs Luca Cazal, Akufen, Cirillo, Ellen Allien, Dubfire and Jackmaster were all on show. After Jamie Jones got cut off in the garden, I made it inside for Boris Werner. It was my first time seeing him play and I was eager to see this experienced DJ in action. Reading that the guru had played DJ sets of more than 10 hours before. I had such an incredible night that I never wanted it to end. I loved everything about DC10. I have yet to experience a Paradise party by Jamie Jones but that can be next! See you on the dancefloor.
