Since moving from London to Ibiza last April, I have had ample opportunity to work my way through a vast amount of tapas, and learn more about not only authentic Spanish cuisine, but also local Ibicencan specialities. Wholeheartedly embracing the Mediterranean way of dining with its ‘sharing is caring’ philosophy, the delicious Iberian ham and plenty of potato-based dishes, naturally I was more than intrigued when I heard about the arrival of the TATEL brand on the White Isle. The concept: Spanish fine dining with a touch of retro glamour and a lively ambience fuelled by great music and surprise performances.

Created by business partners Abel Matutes Prats and Manuel Campos Guallar, owners of private investment firm MABEL CAPITAL group, who joined forces with several Spanish icons such as tennis legend Rafael Nadal, international music star Enrique Iglesias and two-time NBA champion Paul Gasol on this project, it is the TATEL team’s mission to create globally recognised brand that represents the Spanish culinary culture at a haute cuisine level. The opening party just a few weeks ago proved that there has been a definite gap in the market, as the island’s movers and shakers as well as visitors in the know turned out in force to check out this hot new gourmet destination. Located in the stylish Hard Rock Hotel, TATEL Ibiza literally caused a roadblock on its first night of service. And after getting a first taste of the restaurant’s 100% Iberian ham at the launch, my friends and I couldn’t wait to return for a proper sit-down dinner at the beautiful venue.

Inspired by the Roaring ‘20s, the eatery’s interiors channel sumptuous Art Deco chic, a modern take on this era of opulence that is elegant rather than overbearing. Lush green walls, spacious red booths and lashings of copper detailing, as well as ambient lighting, create a sophisticated and stylish dining space. Overlooking the vast stretch of Playa d’en Bossa beach, many of the tables boast magnificent sea views through the floor to ceiling windows, while the bar with its underlit floor and intricate metal work laid over mirrored glass is a real statement piece in its own right – and that’s before you have even sampled the delicious cocktails on offer! We began our evening with a crisp glass of Veuve Cliquot, a refreshing Mojito and a zesty yet sweet Pisco Sour, toasting the feast ahead.

Sitting out on the terrace overlooking the glowing turquoise swimming pool to one side and the deep blue Mediterranean to the other, we perused the menu, which offers a wide variety of Spanish classics from land, sea and air, as well as international favourites. To stave off any hunger pangs, our attentive waiter Paul treated us to an amuse bouche of crispy fried rolls filled with an eggplant mousse and accompanied by a honey-flavoured dipping foam, and yes, it tasted as spectacular as it sounds! Savouring every last crumble, we were now hugely exciting about the plates that were to follow, having realised the quality of TATEL Ibiza’s culinary offering.

Next up was a generous plate of the delicious ham we had already sampled at the opening party a few weeks ago; a limited edition, organic and 100% pure Iberian variety that was sweet, tender and utterly addictive. In an interesting twist on the classic ‘pan con tomate’, we were brought a shiny copper dish filled with whole tomatoes, fresh rosemary, an entire bunch of garlic cloves, TATEL’s own brand olive oil and soft bread to accompany the heavenly slices, all the ingredients to build the ‘pan con tomate’ of your dreams. A mini dish of beef pate completed the set, creamy and delightfully savoury. It took all over willpower not to fill up on this delicious combination before our starters arrived!

We chose a bottle of Château Miraval Côtes de Provence Rosé – yep, that’s Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s winery – to accompany our meal, an elegant and light wine with notes of red fruit and florals and perfect for a balmy summer’s eve. Music is a big part of the TATEL experience, and at this relatively early hour of the evening, soft and sultry jazz was drifting into our ears. Together with the golden glow of the candles and the sound of the crashing waves, the ambience was incredibly beautiful and romantic. Sharing three starters between us, the first we tried was the Ensalada Rusa, a Spanish potato salad made with langoustine and eggs and topped with Siberian Baerii caviar, a delightfully creamy concoction that wowed with a subtle flavour of the sea.

The Huevos Rotos – fried eggs layered on top of Galician potatoes and sprinkled with Iberian ham – were indulgent and addictive in equal measures, combining the dense texture of chunky chips with the softness of the eggs and the crispiness of the ham to create the ultimate comfort food. Last, but not least, we also tucked into a classic Spanish omelette, which had us swooning over its layers of ‘al dente’ potatoes, flavoursome onions and moist centre. While we were fighting over the last bites, inside the restaurant diners were being entertained by an impressive breakdancing performance by David Kiri, who showed off his moves in an energetic routine.

For our mains, we shared a huge – and we mean huge – Veal Milanese, that was delivered in a crunchy batter and smothered in runny egg at the table, before luscious fresh truffle was grated on top – spectacular not only in flavour, but also in presentation. It was accompanied by a crisp green salad with a tasty honey and mustard vinegraitte and a heavenly creamy mash that reminded us of molten cheese in its gooey texture, causing fights around the table for the last spoonful. We also tried the delicious hake in batter, which was topped with a sweet red pepper pesto and dazzled with its soft texture and the rich flavour of the sauce.

Meanwhile, the tempo of the music had gone up a level, with Tribalik playing a mix of funky house classics from the DJ booth in the dining room, keeping the energy in the restaurant vibrant even after several courses of indulgent food. Despite feeling like we had sampled the width and breadth of the menu, we couldn’t resist ordering a couple of desserts and tried the classic Spanish birthday cake, made from layers of crunchy biscuits stuck together by a rich chocolate cream, a chocoholics dream come true! Meanwhile, TATEL’s signature caramelised apple tart topped with sweet vanilla ice cream was surprisingly light, but delivered an explosion of gorgeous flavours that kept us eating long after our stomach was full! After an evening filled with culinary treats, there was only one thing to do before we left: toast a wonderful evening of Spanish hospitality and world-class food with a round of Hierbas liqueur on ice. Hasta luego, TATEL Ibiza!
