Celebrating 18 years on the White Isle, Cocoon is enjoying another spectacular summer full of the hottest international talent and the finest techno beats. One of the clubbing capital’s most credible concepts, founder Sven Väth and his carefully selected group of peers have been dominating Monday nights in Ibiza for almost two decades now and, with by keeping Cocoon’s musical offering firmly ahead of the game, the party never fails to draw crowds from all over the island. Laughing in the face of Monday blues, we went along this week to immerse ourselves into Papa Sven’s musical universe…

Cocoon’s on-island home, Amnesia Ibiza, needs no introduction to White Isle veterans, a venue as legendary as the turntable talent that frequents it. Billed for the night were techno stalwart Ricardo Villalobos, mysterious Berlin-based electronic music visionary Redshape, Zip, Dorian Paic and, much to our excitement a double-whammy of Sven himself, who would be taking to the booth twice for an extra special techno treat.

Totally focussed on their hero in the booth, the educated crowd was there for one thing only: to listen to the master mixer play. The German techno legend started the night on a steady but energetic beat, firing on his audience from the booth and expertly reading their reactions.

The vibe was upbeat as the basslines became more driving as the set progressed, marching on with a healthy bounce that was impossible to resist. Partygoers were dancing with their eyes closed, completely loosing themselves in the music, which made a refreshing change from the selfie culture that can be witnessed at some parties. The fierce dancers were showing off their moves with gusto, visibly enjoying the quality music pumping through Amnesia’s powerful sound system.

Taking over from Väth, next up in the main room was Berlin-based DJ and producer Redshape, who kept his face hidden behind his iconic red facemask for the entirety of his set. He began on a deceptively slow but infectious tip before unleashing a thunderstorm of intense beats across the room that lashed down onto the dancefloor, immediately gripping the crowd’s attention. Showing off his mixing skills with shredded sound shards and minimal Morse signal beeps, he had the main room going wild, with clubbers clambering up on podiums to dance. Dropping his own track Dogz, he had the party going wild.

Over on the Terrace, Zip was holding court over the cavernous club space with a minimal track selection that was all about the bass, with sharp high heads trickling across the room. Clad in their futuristic mirrored body suits, the sexy Cocoon dancers were throwing shapes on an elevated platform that many admired but few could copy, like glamorous aliens who had descended from outer space. With the beats relentlessly pushing on, broken up only by dark, distorted vocals, revellers were taking up every last inch of the dancefloor as the arrival of Cocoon stalwart Ricardo Villalobos edged nearer.

When the Chilean-born producer and DJ finally took to the booth, he was greeted with enthusiastic whistling and cheering, his charismatic and cool presence betraying the fierce set he was about to unleash. He launched into the night with an upbeat but bass-heavy number, almost overwhelming in its intensity as it came pumping out of Amnesia’s incredible sound system. Not taking any prisoners, Villalobos kept the beats relentless and the Terrace throbbing all night, dropping tracks such as Dan Beaumont’s Spirit Dubbin’ and The Afronauts by DJ Oji and DJ Buzzard.

With our feet getting tired from all the dancing, on our way out we decided to stay just that little bit longer to catch ‘a few more minutes’ of Papa Sven’s second set of the night, which was holding the Main Room in a firm grip. Dark, driving and full of big drops, Väth was keeping the energy sky high until the early hours with galloping bass lines and plenty of hands in the air moments. Some time later, we eventually managed to tear ourselves away before we would totally loose ourselves in the quality music. With only two weeks to go until the grand closing, make sure you don’t miss out and secure your tickets for another night spent partying with the Cocoon crew now!
