Space Ibiza is one of the worlds iconic venues, during the summer season it is home to many of the finest spinners and producers on the planet as clubbing royalty set up home on the white isle for a few months. During the winter, as we keep our heads down and dream of the following summer, Space is planning another bar raising season of entertainment as well as hosting a few choice parties around the world. More recently it launched a magazine and its very own app. Essentialibiza caught up with Juan Arenas, one of the men responsible or making this clubbing giant tick, to get the lowdown on the phenomenon that is Space…
When do you start planning for the summer ahead?
I do start during the previous summer actually, so for 2012 bookings, I’m already full on it.
After months of preparation, how much satisfaction do you get when the opening party is in full swing and thousands of clubbers from around the world are having the night of their life?
This is the most beautiful part of what I do, to see people smiling and having a good time!
What is the process on booking DJs to play at Space, what makes a good Space guest?
Living in Ibiza and having so many DJs playing throughout the summer gives us the chance to start getting an idea and be always in the loop for new acts… I always do appreciate artists that produce music and those who know how to create the synergy with crowd.
Does the fact that there are so many rooms make it a challenge or a delight to put a Space line up together?
Personally, it is something that I do like, as we can work with different music genres.
You have assembled some of the finest promoters at Space, who in turn deliver amazing parties on a weekly basis, what do you look for that makes a promoted party a good fit for Space?
Each party has its own character. We look for good value for the crowd!
The Space App is an informative must have tool for clubbers coming to the island, how important is it to stay on top of new technology?
It is good to be on top of new technology, it’s a big tool for the club.
How has the way in which you promote the venue worldwide changed over the years?
We have gone more organically, quality is important.
Space is involved in many projects around the world, how important is it to get outside of Ibiza and get the Space message out there?
The final message is to promote Ibiza.
How is Space Dubai progressing and when will it be open?
I’m not sure about this, we are finalizing the plans.
Space was voted number one club in the world, how much satisfaction does that type of accolade bring?
Always is pleasant to be recognized in this kind of awards, and in the end it’s an award for all the staff of the club, the crowd, the island of Ibiza and its people.
Is it justification for the amount of work that your team puts in every year?
One of them, of course.
What can we look forward to from Space in 2012?
We do our Opening Fiesta on May 27th and Closing Fiesta on October 7th (134 days) I think it’ll be the longest season. About acts, still too soon to talk about that, but some really cool people are joining the family.
