KM5 is one of the finest dining experiences on Ibiza, a place where good food, great service, stunning surroundings, cool music and art all come together to deliver a unique night out. Essentialibiza sent Marty Deeney to check it out…

Looking for a truly high-end dining experience in Ibiza? One which will give you not just a quite astonishing meal which you’ll remember long after your holiday tan has faded, but an entire night of decadent luxury, opulence and hedonism? Well, look no further than KM5. The island is, of course, renowned for unique experiences of the late night variety. However KM5 is an utterly bizarre, utterly brilliant hybrid of restaurant, lounge bar, chill out spot, boutique and just about anything else you care to think of.
Five kilometres from Ibiza town, it’s tucked away in a secluded little spot, which is why it has such a unique atmosphere. Think woodland grotto with hidden fairy wonderland and you’re coming somewhere close. You enter through a clothes shop, which seems slightly surreal but, you soon realise, is perfectly in keeping with the mood of the place. Don’t panic if you’re not quite sure where to go once through the shop – there will be a friendly staff member hovering to direct you down the little hallway into the restaurant proper. You find yourself in a stunning, wide open bar area, with tables stretching off into the garden area – the key element that gives KM5 the wow factor.

The inside restaurant is a large yet intimate circular structure set at the heart of the venue. It’s quite strange walking from a relaxed outdoor venue through a wide doorway and suddenly; finding yourself in what could be a high end restaurant anywhere in the world, with an entirely different mood. Think white linen, gleaming glassware, impeccable, fast service, attentive staff and ludicrously good food. We’re talking silver service and Michelin style, but without the stuffiness.
The open kitchen is always a good sign – watching chefs cook your food is both reassuring and entertaining.
And have the meat. Yes, it’s an island so the fish is great, but this place is renowned for its meat dishes, so when in Rome… I order steak in restaurants everywhere, but the one I had at KM5 is comfortably in the top 3 I’ve ever had. My fish-loving girlfriend tried the lamb, and was suitably wowed. The sides, the bread and dips, the desserts… everything was astonishingly good.

Enjoying the superb wine, we were invited to linger as long as we wanted at our table, before moving either into the outdoor bar, the garden itself or one of the large tents. We opted for the latter and spent a very happy four hours sprawled on vast sofas, drinking spectacular cocktails and puffing on shisha. Like I said, this place is the epitome of opulence. No wonder people dress up – it’s a place to see and be seen, a real occasion dining venue but with surprisingly reasonable prices – our dinner for two came in at just under 200 euro but that included two bottles of wine. The only question remaining is… how soon can we come back?
