After months of winter and weeks of anticipation since the full Cocoon line up was revealed, its global community has been building up to the Ibiza 2017 opening party. Cocoon Ibiza comes of age this summer, celebrating its 18th season on the island and it all got under way on Monday May 29 as Sven Väth welcomed DJ Koze to the terrace while The Club featured Nina Kraviz, Ilario Alicante and Dorian Paic. All roads led to Amnesia as another fantastic summer journey in the company of the world’s biggest techno celebration began.

The fact that Amnesia stands alone in the heart of the countryside, halfway between Ibiza Town and San Antonio adds to its mystique. The journey to the venue becomes part of the night, whether by cab or on one of the numerous specially laid on buses with your fellow clubbers. The car park is already packed as we are dropped off, people from all over the world, as they file into the iconic theatre of electronica. Newbies, excitedly talking up their first Amnesia and Cocoon experience mixed with seasoned regulars, some of whom witnessed the debut party all the years ago. The Cocoon family reunites in its spiritual home on the clubbing capital and we couldn’t be happier!

Inside, the club is already filling up, Cocoon is always a capacity show and the latest opening promises to be keeping to tradition. The production is minimal compared to other huge Ibiza parties but that’s just how Cocoon likes it. The visuals come courtesy of Dub Video Connection, who have visually choreographed many of the recent summer seasons. Complementing the music perfectly, the visuals add yet another element to a party that is coming to the boil nicely. DJ Koze is a popular Cocoon guest, always challenging the dancefloor and the opening was no different. Highlight of his set undoubtedly dropping Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State Of Consciousness’, which threatened the roof of the famous old club. Sven Väth was on top form, taking control of the booth he was born to play in and whisking the Terrace off on a magical musical journey, including the amazing ‘Glutes’ by Patrick Baumel on Afterlife.

The Club was also treated to a musical masterclass courtesy of Dorian Paic, Ilario Alicante and Nina Kraviz, three artists that are not unknown to the Cocoon faithful. This room offered a slightly harder techno trip, with Nina Kraviz challenging the packed floor to a dance-off as she eased through her set and Ilario Alicante brought his performance to a close with Robert Miles’ ‘Children’, an emotive finish to another fantastic performance. As with all great things it had to come to an end but, once again, Cocoon showed just why it has been one of the driving forces on the island for the last 17 years and its 18th birthday season promises to be its biggest yet. Monday June 5 sees Sven remain in the terrace, welcoming Gerd Janson alongside him while Adam Beyer makes his first appearance of the summer alongside Patrick Topping, Dense & Pika in the Club.
