Babylon Beach is the latest addition to the ever-growing list of cool destinations around the island, just outside Santa Eulalia on the road to Es Canar, Babylon Beach sits on a small cliff with stunning views out to sea. It offers the option of sunbathing and relaxing during the day and fine dining at night but unlike many of its counterparts around the island, the emphasis is on chilling out all of the time. No big name DJs or branded parties, the resident DJ, George Solar, plays strictly on a mellow tip, this truly is a spot to relax and unwind.
The freehold is owned by Angie Anderson, who, along with partner and legendary Ibiza front man Vaughan, has created a pocket of tranquillity just outside Santa Eulalia. There is a definite family feel to the operation, proven Ibiza operator Justin along with Jack and Mark, makes up the management team and backbone, with assistance from Lauren, while head chef Marcelo makes sure everything runs smoothly in the kitchen. The staff is professional, efficient ad helpful but with a smile on their face, this looks and feels like a fun place to work. The front of the restaurant has a short drop to the water so is not ideal for kids but Babylon Beach has that covered, they have an amazing supervised play area to the back, where the kids can get lost in multiple adventures while you enjoy your meal.
Parking the car out front, you don’t really get a sense of the beauty of Babylon Beach, it’s not until you walk into the garden area, where the tables are all set for dinner, and get that first glimpse of the view that it hits you. We like to get down to new venues early, see them before the action starts and get a true sense of what they are about. Babylon Beach is stunning; it’s a place that you could lose yourself in, whether you are spending the day on one of the beds at the edge of the water or wining and dining the night away with friends, the level of comfort you feel instantly renders time insignificant. The project is very much in its infancy, launching only ten weeks ago, but with plans to stay open through the winter and to evolve naturally, exciting times lie ahead.
As we enjoy our now customary pre-meal mojito while perusing the menu, Vaughan explains that they try wherever possible to source the contents from organic farm Casa Pere Musson. Bread is delivered to the table with a choice of three tasty dips; it’s the attention to detail like this that sets Babylon Beach apart. The menu is not a huge one but offers amazing variety, for starters we opt for a goats cheese salad with fresh figs and fruit to share and Samorejo con Gambas, chilled homemade tomato soup with grilled prawns. The salad is tricky, with loads of additional flavour coming from grapes, walnuts and pomegranate seeds, the goats cheese is caramelized with sugar on top, which is a genius twist on the traditional dish. The soup disappears in quick time so it’s safe to say it was delicious. While we wait for our main courses – cod with corn flour and honey sauce, Caribbean chicken with Basmati rice, Babylon cheeseburger with lettuce tomato and a tangy salsa with roast potatoes, beef cheek with puree of apple and roasted potatoes – George Solar is putting together the perfect soundtrack for the venue and location. Cool beats, still on a mellow tip, with the odd recognisable re-edit dropped in for good measure, it’s loud enough to listen to but not intrusive, again, another detail that Babylon gets spot on.
The mojito’s have long gone, replaced by a fine bottle of red, which we are told will compliment the meat dishes perfectly. The main courses arrive and if they taste anywhere near as good as they look, we have won a watch! I opted for the burger, amidst some stiff competition from around the table, and its safe to say that it is the finest burger I have tasted on the island this summer. Cooked to perfection, with some salad and pickles to compliment the flavour and a bun that finishes off the combination, so good I nearly forgot about the roast potatoes in the side dish! I tried a little bit of the Cod, which melted in the mouth and had an amazing flavour, the rest of the main courses get the silent approval that comes when food is so good it stops the conversation. As for the wine, true to form, it does compliment the meat perfectly.
The row of beds along the waterfront offers the prefect place to relax and let the main course digest before tackling a dessert. The sky is clear and the view amazing; it’s a peaceful end to a fantastic meal. The only problem I can see is the urge to drop off for forty winks is overwhelming! Back at the table the final course arrives, my white chocolate mousse with orange is light, fluffy and delicious and doesn’t stand a chance as it is destroyed in seconds. The homemade cheesecake provides the last twist from the kitchen, presented in a glass and receives the same treatment as the white chocolate mousse. Nic, our trusty photographer is the only one who shows any restraint, as he is too busy capturing the beauty of the desserts before we devour them. He finally gets to sit down and enjoy his homemade chocolate cake with vanilla cream and coullis. The desserts provide the perfect end to an amazing dining experience, on the evidence of tonight, it’s no surprise that Babylon Beach has made such a big impact in a short space of time.
We are delighted to add Babylon Beach to our list of must visit eateries on the island but if you love a beach club where bottles of spirits are accompanied by sparklers, as long as you’ve spent enough on them, and the beats can be heard half a mile away then Babylon Beach is not for you. This is the epitome of stylish simplicity, warm and friendly with a family feel that makes you instantly at home. This is subtle and effortlessly classy, where genuine staff happily look after you and make sure you get the most out of your experience. Babylon Beach is only ten weeks old and already it has put its stamp on summer 2012 and with it opening throughout winter, we may have to think about moving the Essentialibiza HQ slightly further north!
