The charming beach restaurant that takes pride of place in the picturesque cove of Cala Gracioneta holds a special place in the heart of many an island resident and holidaymaker, so off-season visitors and Ibiza locals are delighted with the news that ‘El Chiringuito’ remains open in the low season months, too. With the island revelling in what can only be described as a ridiculously glorious Indian Summer heatwave, we went along for a relaxed lunch with family and friends to make the most of the sunshine.

With its stunning natural surroundings, laid-back atmosphere and a menu that combines both healthy Mediterranean fare as well as hearty Spanish classics, the suggestion to enjoy a meal at the Mambo Group owned seaside venue is never not met with enthusiasm. Overlooking a small, sandy beach with calm and crystal clear waters, it’s a great place to bring the kids, too, or enjoy a quick dip and sunbathing session with friends before or after your meal. In November, El Chiringuito Cala Gracioneta will be open from Thursday to Sunday between the hours of 12.00 and 18.00, making it the perfect destination for a lunch by the sea.

A couple of nutritious juices helped us to keep hunger pangs at bay as we waited for the rest of our party to arrive and then, in the expert care of restaurant manager Javier, we were underway. We began the meal with a mix of light and more indulgent starters, including a healthy and utterly addictive tuna tartar, the delicate fish set off by chunks of fruity strawberries and a burst of saltiness from its fish roe topping. Huge, juicy red prawns were served the traditional way in hot pan of oil and garlic cloves, with slices of crunchy bread to mop up the sauce.

Our seafood feast continued with a bowl of steaming mussels, which were bursting with a fragrant coconut milk and lemongrass sauce and topped with fresh slices of ginger and tomato chunks, an exotic and delicious combination that brought the flavours of Asia to life. Another highlight we hadn’t tried before were thick seared slices of salmon served on an unusual but delightful cream made with pureed nuts and melon, and a subtle hint of spice. Last, but not least, in our book no one is allowed to leave El Chiringuito without having tried the calamari, which, in our humble opinion, are a textbook example of how it should be done thanks to their perfect non-greasy batter, squishy texture and aromatic tartar sauce.

Our main courses arrived and we felt very virtuous tucking into a delicious and very nutritious superfood salad made with brown lentils, colourful beetroot and sweetcorn, pear, crunchy asparagus and a sprinkling of sunflower seeds, a wholesome but utterly moreish mix that made a perfect side for the grilled lamb chops we devoured. The meat had the most subtle flavour and was heavenly soft, seasoned only with fresh herbs and sea salt.

On the other end of the spectrum, we couldn’t resist ordering the restaurant’s signature burger, a juicy and soft beef patty topped with fragrant molten cheese and perched between two soft wholemeal buns. The premium meat and preparation was so delicious, we had to ask Javier for the secret behind this rather outstanding patty and bun combination, but sadly he refused to reveal it! Finishing off our selection of main course was a tangy chicken curry served with potato chunks and apple slices, the meat tender and juicy and the spice combination just right to make it a perfect autumn warmer.

Lured away from our table by the many cosy spots to sit back and soak up the rays from, part of our group disappeared down to the beach with frothy cappuccinos, while the other enjoyed a couple of cheeky desserts on the comfortable sofas in the lounge area. A fluffy and delightfully crumbly puff pastry confection filled with zesty lemon cream offered a light option for those who were struggling to squeeze in another course, leaving us swooning with every bite. And – drumroll please – after a summer filled with cakes and ice cream, we found another postre favourite to add to our list, El Chiringuito’s interpration of the classic apple pie, which serves the caramelised fruit slices on a bed of frozen custard and a crumbly base, accompanied by a completely addictive green tea ice cream.

Just like the White Isle itself, EL Chiringuito Cala Gracioneta is a gourmet destination that is just as beautiful and charming – if not more so – in the low season months, with the added benefit of shorter waiting times and more space on the beach! We cannot urge you enough to drop in for seaside lunch in the beautiful autumnal sunshine and make the most of the peaceful atmosphere and welcoming service.
