Afternoon In Atzaro Chriniguito

Posted on July 15, 2013

It’s family day at Cala Nova, the popular spot just off Es Canar, kids are playing in the sea and all the beds are full as we wander down the hill past Atzaro restaurant, looking regal at the edge of the cliff overlooking the beach. It’s a picture postcard scene, umbrellas up all along the stretch of sand, offering some shade from the sun, multi coloured swimsuits adding a splash of colour, a bright blue sky and turquoise sea, peppered with swimmers and those happy to splash about at the edge. The vibe is a particularly warm and friendly one as Spanish locals making the most of the weekend off work mix with tourists who are either in-the-know or who have stumbled fortuitously onto one of Ibiza’s beach gems.

The Chiringuito Cala Nova

We are on a mission, to check out the Atzaro Chiringuito and spend some down time on the beach for the first time this summer. The Chiringuito is the second part of the Atzaro beach concept, offering the perfect foil for the restaurant. Things are more informal on the beach but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t pass the Atzaro litmus test of cool. The Chiringuito offers a rustic, almost old school beach experience, where you can sit comfortably in your beach attire and order some fine food and drink before returning to your spot on the sand or you can drop in and enjoy a spot of lunch and take advantage of the view. It instantly transports you to a place of tranquility, no matter how your day is unfolding. Our day has taken a real turn for the better when we get a look at the menu.

The Chiringuito menu offers a great variety and quality, making choosing simple, our starters are made up of flowers and vegetable tempura, 3 dips hummus babaganush, and tatziki with pita bread, marinated salmon with avocado salad and green salad with goats cheese and strawberry sauce. Jo and Charlie have taken the opportunity of our beach visit to have the day out with little Raffy and while we chat about the starters, he plays happily in the sand just on the other side of the walkway. It’s a great spot for all the family and with the kid friendly staff at Atzaro Chiringuito it all adds up to a stress free lunch. The starters are not long in arriving and if you weren’t aware of the Atzaro connection before, you are now. The presentation is streets ahead of the normal beach chiringuito, it might offer a casual place to hang out and unwind but the food still has that fine dining element to it.

We have picked one of the tables that sits on the outside edge of the restaurant, which means we can grab some sun on our faces if we want and also bury our toes in the sand as we wait for our main courses to arrive – bbq sardines and vegetables, beef burger 180 grams with potatoes, lamb chops with chimichurri sauce and potatoes and chicken satay with peanut sauce and basmati rice. The only error we have made all afternoon is failing to bring our swimming shorts with us, as Raffy and some of his friends head to the water for a dip and to cool down, we can’t help feeling a little envy. There’s nothing like a visit to the beach to engage the big kid in all of us, whether it is making and destroying sand castles, playing with the bat and ball or just simply taking a dip in the ocean, it is the simple things that give us the most pleasure!

That said, there’s nothing simple about the food that has just landed at our table, the sardines are so fresh, the little faces are still filled with shock! The chicken satay is a favourite of mine and the smell of the peanut sauce is making my mouth water but the tender pieces of lamb complimented by the tangy flavour of the chimmychurry sauce soon wipe all thoughts of the satay from my mind. The chops are soft and perfectly prepared, melting in the mouth and full of flavour. The sauce is quite addictive, long after the chops have disappeared I still find myself dooking my potatoes. Is that wrong? The beef burger looks like it wouldn’t be out of place in one of those restaurant challenges, a healthy beef patty surrounding by delicious fillings. The mains are dispatched with just the right amount of respect and restraint but they call for a break as we let the first two courses settle before debating dessert. To help us ponder over postres we have a jug of sangria well, we are at the beach after all!

The Chiringuito Cala Nova

The Chiringuito has launched a musical concept every Saturday, after 4pm, where DJs and live musicians will pop in and keep the patrons entertained during their meal. The DJ has been amazing so far, picking his tunes to perfection and delivering a very cool vibe to add to our dining experience. It’s easy to get lost in the tunes, staring off into the distance, the rock cliffs and out to sea, it not hard to imagine how time can slip away from you in a place like this. The desserts landing bring me back to the present and what a delicious way to round off a great meal, with a fruit plate, ice cream (3 scoops of chocolate) and coulant chocolate with vanilla ice cream. As we tick into the last course, the DJ drops an unusual version of Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky, how appropriate!
